‘Focused on Foraging’

Armadillos have poor eyesight, however they have a good sense of smell. This one was so intensely involved with looking for food, I believe it didn't even know I was there. I was still surprised this one let me get so close. I actually had to back up at one point, until it stopped, sniffed and realized I was there. Happy hunting little one!

‘Dinner time!’

It was a tranquil evening. The winds were calm and the sun was setting. I was out hiking and I came across this Limpkin, who was meticulously working the shoreline of a small canal. It was quite efficient at finding mollusks and snails for dinner.

‘Curious Yearlings’

Sometimes when I go out with my camera hoping to catch wildlife, I see nothing. This was one of those evenings. Many of the places I camp is on public land, which is sometimes used for free range cattle. I did come across a small herd and these two yearlings were very curious and kept watching me.

‘White-eyed Vireo’

A small stocky songbird that has a striking gray head, vivid yellow spectacles, and a bright white iris that contrasts with a dark, piercing pupil. I caught this one while out for an early morning hike. The sunlight was just right to highlight its details.

‘Gopher Tortoise’

While staying at Istokpoga Canal Camp, near Okeechobee, Florida, I spotted this local resident. It came out of its burrow and started grazing on the grass in the area. The Gopher Tortoise, I named this one Scooter, is a threatened, protected species by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Watching this tortoise casually grazing, it gave me the feeling that this one lead a slow-paced, deliberate, methodical life. I smiled and nodded in approval.

‘National Naval Aviation Museum’

I visited this museum, in Pensacola, Florida, in November of last year, as I was traveling through Florida's panhandle. It is the world's largest naval aviation museum and has an incredible collection of aircraft and provides a detailed history of naval aviation. A must see if you are traveling through Pensacola, Florida.

‘Kennedy Space Center’

Hearing the news that Artemis II may launch this evening reminded me of a recent visit to the Kennedy Space Center. On February 24th, the day before my visit, Artemis II, was taken back to the Vehicle Assembly Building for maintenance issues. Now it's back on the launch pad ready to go. The Kennedy Space Center is truly unique and amazing! I even managed to witness and photograph a Space X Falcon 9 rocket launch the evening of March 1st.

‘Red Shouldered Hawk’

For as common as this bird is in Florida, I struggled for several weeks to get a descent photograph of one. Just as I was ready to depart Biscayne National Park Visitors Center, I spotted this Red Shouldered Hawk perched in a tree above my van in the parking lot. I’ll take it!

‘Northern Mockingbird’

While exploring the boardwalk at Biscayne National Park Visitors Center, this Northern Mockingbird landed in a tree in front of me and posed with a bold, confident posture.

‘Shared Duty’

From my vantage point I couldn't see any eggs or chicks in the nest, however during the early morning light, the male rose up, stretched its wings and took off towards the water. Meanwhile the female remained in the nest. I’m guessing she was guarding the nest and incubating eggs. 20 minutes later, in a display of dedication and instinct, the male came back with a fish in its talons to share with its mate. The female responded by bowing her head and stretching her wings to show appreciation.
