A caribou mother does not simply discard her antlers. She leaves behind a mineral reserve that may help nourish the next generation.

And the cleverest detail is where she leaves it.

Female caribou often keep their antlers through winter, long after males have shed theirs, then drop them around the calving season. Across Arctic nursery grounds, those abandoned racks can remain scattered over the tundra for decades.

Caribou have been observed gnawing shed antlers, including old ones marked by generations of teeth. The bone contains calcium and phosphorus, minerals heavily demanded during pregnancy, milk production, and the growth of a fresh set of antlers.

It is not quite a mother casually eating her entire crown for lunch. It is more like the herd turning the landscape into a slow-release mineral cabinet, stocked by earlier animals and revisited when nutrition is limited.

In one of Earth’s leanest environments, even yesterday’s bones can become tomorrow’s milk.

The tundra wastes almost nothing, not even a crown.

Daniel Edward Aykroyd born on July 1, 1952, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is a multifaceted Canadian-American comedian, actor, screenwriter, and producer whose career launched in the mid-1970s. He was a founding member of Saturday Night Live (1975–1979), earning an Emmy in 1977 for Outstanding Writing. Aykroyd co-created the iconic Blues Brothers with John Belushi, starring in the 1980 film and its musical spin-offs. He co-wrote and starred as Dr. Ray Stantz in Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), and later in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Frozen Empire (2024). His other credits include Trading Places, Driving Miss Daisy (Oscar-nominated), Spies Like Us, and The Great Outdoors.
