I almost never see this at a wedding.

Most of my couples will have a grandparent present, but almost none have ALL of their grandparents in attendance.

I was so excited once I heard this would be happening.

This image holds not just Logan and Andie's parents and siblings, but all of their grandparents. What a treasure of an image.

Think about what it will be like for Logan and Andie to look back at this image in 50 years. Or imagine their kids, looking into the faces of their aunts, uncles, grandparents, and all of their great grandparents.

This just became a family heirloom.

But as cool as this is, it's not about how many grandparents you have coming to your wedding.

No matter who is coming, whether hundreds or just the two of you, what might it be like to look back at your memories 50+ years later?

That's the gift I want to give you, that's the gift that is coming for Logan and Andie.

I cannot wait to dive into these images in the weeks ahead. Thank you Logan and Andie for opening up your hearts this weekend. And thank you to all your family and friends for welcoming me so generously.

What is ACTUALLY the point of photography?⁠
⁠
Too often photography becomes the point of an experience. We live in a world where it's almost too easy to document. In a world like that it's even more important to ask why we're doing this. ⁠
⁠
So why and how am I doing photography?⁠
⁠
My approach makes it so that photography NEVER gets in the way of what you want to experience. I believe so strongly that you should get to be completely in the moment, never wondering about documentation.
⁠
It's not for Instagram, it's not for anyone else except the people who are there and the yet-to-be-created future people that get to hear about it from you.⁠
⁠
Photographs are made for memories, not memories for photographs.⁠

Here's one from the archives, taken 10 years ago at Peter and Liz's wedding. It's hard to remember what it was like then. I was brand new, just two years full time in photography and eager to create. ⁠

This is day 1/7 of sharing favorites from 2016.⁠

This little flower girl didn't want to put on her heart necklace (held by mom in the left part of the frame). Grandad walked up to her, gently spoke to her, and convinced her that it would be perfect. She ended up listening to him and soon put it on. ⁠
⁠
This is an image that will forever remain with me. It's one of the first times I felt a strong, lasting story at a wedding that wasn't a traditional moment like the ceremony. It's an image that got me excited to keep finding more like it.⁠

Pretty photos are great, can be planned, but can be less meaningful and are not particularly difficult to take. ⁠

Story-filled images are great, but can't always be planned. They take careful, watchful presence and are much more difficult yet satisfying to freeze.⁠

Imagine opening up your wedding album on your anniversary, or using it to share stories with your kids (or grandkids) one day.⁠

I remember my own grandmother telling me about her life and what the world was like in the late 1950's through the lens of her wedding images.⁠

When you interact with your wedding memories via a physical album something powerful happens, something different from the experience you get on a screen.⁠

This is why every one of my couples get's an heirloom album. ⁠
To me it's non-negotiable. The album IS the final product and the best way you'll return to your memories for years to come.⁠

I see humor a lot at weddings days. Maybe it's something I found funny, or I see people laugh and react to something happening. ⁠

Humor comes to my mind a lot, I see funny things all over. If you know me well enough, you'll start to see it come out.⁠

Weird obscure quotes (probably from The Emperor's New Groove). ⁠

Giggling at something stupid, word play, dad jokes. Laughing at something that didn't go right (because what else can you do sometimes).⁠

How do you keep what matters most front and center when there are so many things pulling you away?⁠

At this point, we've moved through all of our major summer activities. Summer camp, beach vacation, family trips, hosting friends, birthdays, and more. And in the middle of it our twins are nearing nine months old 🤯. I've been grateful for a fairly slow wedding schedule this summer, allowing for deeper connection with family and friends. I didn't feel the pull away from family that I sometimes can.⁠

I think it's a similar pull that couples can feel as they plan and approach their wedding. There are SO many things vying for your attention. It's an important time to pay attention to what you pay attention to. ⁠
⁠
It can be helpful to ask:⁠
⁠
What is distracting me from enjoying this season of wedding planning?⁠
⁠
What would make the time leading up to my wedding day more enjoyable and meaningful?⁠
⁠
What matters most, OR what do I need to keep coming back to to remind myself of why this all matters?⁠
⁠
That's what I tried to do this summer. I didn't do it perfectly, I felt guilt from "getting behind" and got distracted by mindless entertainment. But I moved forward each time and keep family front and center. Apart from keeping on top of upcoming fall weddings, it was good to let work take a bit of a back seat.⁠
⁠
I'm curious, as the summer comes to a close, how could you remind yourself of what matters most this fall?
