Before a shutter clicks, a drawing is started, or even a plan for what to create exists, there’s inspiration. 🌿🪶

Sometimes, it begins with a moment like this. Being out on the water, listening to the birds, watching the light dance across the landscape. Just taking it all in 😌

These are the moments that spark creativity, and the places that give us something worth creating for. But natural spaces like these aren’t guaranteed to be here forever. The Land Conservancy of McHenry County works to protect and preserve the land that makes this area so special.

Join us at Art of the Land THIS weekend, Friday, October 23rd & Saturday, October 24th, from 6:30-9pm! An Art Show and Fundraiser (there will be art, art demonstrations, music, food and more) celebrating the landscapes around us while supporting TLC’s conservation work.

Because before nature becomes art, it deserves to be protected as nature. 🩷

One minute I’m calmly stalking an osprey. The next, it’s the final 10 seconds on the clock, and I’ve got ONE shot at this 🤣

I’d been keeping an eye on this guy the whole trip, and this particular evening was no different. He did some fishing, ate, and was wiping his face when, unbeknownst to me, the sky EXPLODED.

The color seemed to appear out of nowhere, and suddenly I had what felt like mere seconds to decide whether to grab my tripod, where to move, how to capture it all before the light changed, …

So, handheld it was, sprinkled with a generous helping of hopes and prayers 😮‍💨

The osprey stayed put, of course.
Unbothered.

Now, here’s your challenge: can you spot him 👀

In other, yet related, news, I’ll be exhibiting at 4th Fridays at The Dole in Crystal Lake next Friday! Two pieces were accepted into the Photography Only exhibit (this being one of them), and one was also selected for Mixed Art. I’m beyond excited to be part of both!

Nature has a way of feeling mysterious, even otherworldly. But beyond the shadows, eerie sounds, and dancing lights is something very real: a world full of wonder, life, and places worth protecting.

That’s what makes Art of the Land so special. It celebrates the natural world while supporting the Land Conservancy of McHenry County and its work to preserve the land for future generations 🩷

The plan was a sunrise. It just wasn’t THIS sunrise 🤣

I headed out at 5am hoping for a little magic. With thick clouds sitting along the horizon, and nothing else in the sky, things weren’t looking promising. I found my spot, but just wasn’t loving my lens/angle/location/… combination, and nothing was happening. Yeah, I tapped out.

Instead of packing it up and immediately leaving, I switched to my zoom lens and moved to another spot to experiment with some compositions for my next try. Of course that’s when the sky came alive. Cue the frantic scrambling to get the shot 🤪

Here’s the thing about nature photography: You can plan, research, check forecasts, set alarms, and drive miles out of your way, but ultimately, you’re at Mother Nature’s mercy. Sometimes it’s failed attempt after failed attempt, lost sleep, and a whole lot of money spent on gas, among other things. But every once in a while, the timing comes together, and you get to bring a moment like this home.

This was one of those mornings 🌅

Dear world, can we just take a moment 🩷

A sunrise. A sunset. Those little moments when the world puts on a show and you can’t help but stop and take it all in 😌 That’s why I keep reaching for my camera. I want to hold on to that feeling, share it with others, and remind us of what a beautiful world we have to look after.

When I saw Love Letters as the theme for Lure of the Local 5, sunrise and sunset images felt like a pretty natural fit. Sometimes, the world says it best without a single word.

Here’s a little sneak peek at the three pieces that I’m humbled to be part of the exhibition. The full reveal comes next Friday! 😉

Same bird. Two lenses. Two completely different perspectives 👀

I photographed this Great Blue Heron from two very different angles and areas, and I love how completely different the resulting images feel. One lets you get right up into the details (Telephoto Zoom, standing in the reeds). The other pulls you back and lets you see him as part of the landscape around him (Wide Angle, lying ground level in mud).

And honestly, I think that’s one of the things I love most about photography. Sometimes changing your perspective changes the whole story 🩷

There are places you photograph because they’re stunning and stop you in your tracks. And then there are places that make you wonder what came before you. The Badlands are definitely both 🤩

Long before I was sitting here watching the sunset, this landscape was home to ancient rhinos, three-toed horses, camels, and all sorts of other creatures. And today, floofy cows, and more, still roam these rugged landscapes. Millions of years of stories, all in one view.

Breathtaking is nice. But knowing what’s beyond the view makes it mean a whole lot more 🩷

They’re still here… for now 💚

I’m definitely soaking up every last hummingbird visit while I can. Around here, the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are starting to head South for the Winter. These tiny little birds have a seriously impressive journey ahead of them, with most migrating to Mexico and Central America. All that distance for a bird that weighs about as much as a couple of pennies 🤯

If you have Hummingbird feeders, don’t be nervous about leaving them up in the Fall. Keeping them filled won’t keep the birds from migrating, and late travelers may appreciate the extra fuel.
