Gray's lake becomes Grayslake!

Happy anniversary!

One of the most common questions asked is "When did Gray's Lake become Grayslake?"

The answer is today, February 5, 129 years ago.

On February 5, 1895, the United States Post Office officially changed the name of Gray’s Lake to Grayslake as seen in this document.

The Focus on Grayslake exhibit at the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum officially closed last Friday. I knew the teardown would be an emotional thing and I made an effort not to let it affect me.

But it did.

When I started this project in 2020, I hadn't realized the impact it would have. Not just on the community in general but on me, personally.

The exhibit was open to the public for nine months. And in that time, I've had strangers come up to me in tears to let me know that the exhibit hit them unexpectedly. That it reminded them not just of how much there was to love about Grayslake but also why. And with every encounter, I'm reminded why I call Grayslake home.

Thank you.

Thank you to the museum for inviting Focus on Grayslake. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who did such justice to the photos and stories by how lovingly they were displayed. Thank you to the public servants that work hard to build it into what it is now and know it can be even better in the future. Thank you to the people that shared their stories. Thank you to my husband for finding us a home here and supporting this project when there was no real purpose other than for the joy of it. Thank you to every person who came to visit.

Thank you, Grayslake.

Today, someone stopped me to tell me that when they had been ready to move, they hadn't decided where to settle. Then they saw the Focus on Grayslake exhibit at the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum and knew that this was were they were moving to.

Grayslake is now officially their home. The have not been disappointed. My heart is full.

“I learned to ride a bike when I was, maybe, seven. I ride a lot. Like to and from swimming lessons …

“I was either eight or nine when I got the idea of this bike seat. I overheard my grandpa’s conversation with my dad about inventions. I thought inventions were pretty neat …

“I had this idea for a bike seat. To make it more comfortable …

“It took two years to get a patent. The process was pretty difficult. Honestly, my dad walked me through the steps and stuff and made it easier for me. It was a creative process …

“A prototype would be cool. The top layer would be leather so that it dries up easily and can be left outside. The inside layer would be waterproof too but some kind of gel like in the patent …”

“You can come to the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum and see my patent on display. They have a new bike exhibit and it’s part of it.”
