Conceptualization vs. Spontaneity

Stephen Shore’s early success included selling three black-and-white prints to MOMA at age 14. When he was 17, he met Andy Warhol and asked if he could come to the Factory and take pictures. Then, at 24, he hit the road more or less alone, spanning America on a series of voyages of discovery—not only personal but collective, exposing a country unfamiliar to natives who encountered it every day. The resulting photographs “were, and are, the finest visual apprehensions of national realities since Robert Frank’s ‘The Americans,’ in 1958,” the New Yorker’s late art critic Peter Schjeldahl writes. Billie Holiday released from prison March 16 1948
74years ago today, Lady Day was released early from Alderson Federal Prison in West Virginia because of her good behavior. On May 16, 1947, a year ago, Holiday was arrested for possession of narcotics in her New York apartment.

When she arrived at Newark, her pianist Bobby Tucker and her dog Mister were waiting. The dog leaped at Holiday, knocking off her hat, and tackling her to the ground. "He began lapping me and loving me like crazy," she said. A woman thought the dog was attacking Holiday. She screamed, a crowd gathered, and reporters arrived. "I might just as well have wheeled into Penn Station and had a quiet little get-together with the Associated Press, United Press, and International News Service," she said.
