On Memorial Day in the USA: I have been honored to know and photograph many war veterans and true heroes. Two that are gone now but not forgotten : 1) Tuskegee Airman, Alexander Jefferson, of the all African-American US Army Air Force 332nd Fighter group, a decorated Mustang Pilot that was shot down during a mission over Southern France in 1944, broke his leg on landing in the forest in his parachute, and was sent to Stalag Luft III N***s POW camp where other Allied Officer Prisoners were held. Here he explains some of his dog-fight tactics in his Mustang. Alexander passed on in 2022 at age 100.. 2) 101st. US Army Airborne's William "Wild Bill" Guarnere, one of the famed "Band of Brothers", a decorated paratrooper who lost his leg from shrapnel wounds while trying to carry his friend Joe Toye to safety during the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne. Wild Bill passed in 2014 at age 91.

In the USA today is Memorial Day when we honor all military service persons who made the ultimate sacrifice. Here are three photos. 1) Arlington National Cemetery, as a horse-draw casket containing the remains of an Air Force crew, shot down over North Vietnam during the Vietnam war have been honorably returned by Vietnam and finally get their honored burial at Arlington. 2) The Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., engraved with the names of the over 50,000 American service persons who perished in that war. 3) In Washington D.C., next to the Vietnam Memorial Wall, each year a ceremony is held for the service persons who died on their way to or from the Vietnam conflict as they aren't included on the wall. A small girl places a small American flag next to his photo to honor the memory of her late grandfather, who died coming back to the USA after his tour of duty.

Thailand Trip Post #3:

I traveled 2500 miles around Thailand during a 18-day cultural/historical trip early this year with four friends (my Thai-American hosting couple and their longtime college friend) and our intrepid Thai driver, making thousands of exposures of people, places, animals and more. I will be periodically posting photos from that trip, in chronological order.

All photos here made with Sony A1 II camera, and the following lens, Sony 24-105mm f4 G; Sony 24mm f1.4 GM; Tamron 50-300mm f4.5-6.3. ; Laowa 10mm f2.8 Zero-D.

1-9: Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the Bridge over the River Kwai. During the Second World War, tens of thousands of British Commonwealth, Dutch and American personnel became prisoners of war (POWs) of the Japanese. In 1942 the Japanese ordered the building of a 250 mile railway through the mountainous jungles of Thailand and Burma.

60,000 POWs worked alongside 200,000 forced local laborers; all suffered from Malnutrition, disease and mistreatment. When the line was completed in 1943 ,12,000 POWs and 100,000 local laborers had perished.
Here in Kanchanaburi War cemetery more than 5000 British Commonwealth and 1.900 Dutch servicemen are buried or commemorated.

Nearby on this train line is the famed “Bridge on the Rive Kwai” immortalized in a novel and an Academy Award winning fictionalized movie, where in reality many POWs did labor and perish in its construction.

Destroyed by the Allies during the war, after the war its destroyed wood trestles were rebuilt with steel trestles, and it served for a time as part of the Thai National Railway. Now it only serves as a managed historical site, visited by countless thousands of people each year from around the world.

6) The Bridge over the River Kwai today
7) A Buddhist Monk, deep in thought, solemnly walks across the bridge .
8) A father and his daughter make a memory on the bridge.
9 A young boy waves at visitors to the bridge.

10-21 City of Ayuthaya, founded in 1351 was the first capital of Thailand, with a thriving population, grand palaces and beautiful temples. It was sacked and burned in 1767 by the Burmese Army. The temples and city ruins are preserved , honored and visited.
Dressed in Traditional Thai clothing, many of all ages make the Ayuthaya Historical Park a backdrop for memorable photos.

20) Seated Buddha in Wat Mahathat temple complex in Ayutthaya
21) Wat Mahathat, a sandstone Buddha’s head entangled within a bodhi tree’s entwined roots. Many Buddha statue heads were cut off by the sacking Burmese army in 1767 and left on the ground, and this bodhi tree emerged from the ground with its treasure in its roots.
Cheers

I have had a loaner copy of the new Sony 400-800mm f6.3-f8 telephoto zoom lens from Sony Pro Support to try out for one week,

My 24/7 fulltime job now is taking great loving care of my 99-year old mom. So I have had to stay close to home and take some short trips, when I could, to a nearby lake to get some shots with this lens. Sorry no diving Osprey around right now, LOL, but some gulls, ducks, Canada geese and egrets, plus lots of boaters and jetskiers on Grapevine Lake, Grapevine, Texas, USA.

I shot all the photos here with this lens using my 50 megapixel Sony A1 II camera at various focal lengths between 400mm and 800mm, including using both 1.4X and 2.0 X teleconverters for 1120mm and 1600mm focal length shots. I handheld the lens/camera combo for some shots, but most were shot atop a Sirui Rapid System SVM-165 monopod.

Though the lens is bigger and heavier than its sister lens, the Sony 200-600m f5.6-6.3 lens, this new lens has similar design and functions, and handled and performed superbly. The A1 II has quick subject acquisition, and fast and snappy autofocus with this lens and its linear focus motors. The lens is very sharp, has a short, less than 90 degrees full zoom range rotation, and all the function buttons you need. IMHO it is a winner in every way, including value for its reasonable price. I hate to be sending it back to Sony.

Photos were shot in compressed raw format on CF-Express Type A memory cards, and processed in Adobe Lightroom, with some getting some noise reduction from Topaz Denoise AI software. Click on each photo to see full frame.

3) Mallard taking off from the lake: 597mm, f8, 1/3200 sec., ISO 8000
4) Gull flying: 800mm, f8, 1/4000 sec., ISO 5000
5) Gulls in vertical queue awaiting their turns to dive into and feed on likely small shad fish: 800mm, f8, 1/4000 sec., ISO 2000
6) Mottled Duck coming in for a water landing: with 1.4 X TC, 1120mm, f11, 1/4000 sec., ISO 5000
7) Two Gulls flying in tandem: with 2.0X TC, 1600mm, f16,1/4000 sec., ISO 12800
8) Great White Egret on the wing over lake: 610mm, f8, 1/4000 sec., ISO 12800
9) Mottled Duck and Mallard: 700mm, f9, 1/4000 sec., ISO 12800
10) Crop of above Mottled Duck shot, showing water droplets and fine detail.
11) Great White Egret nestled in secluded alcove of lake: 550mm, f8, 1/1600 sec., ISO 12800
12) Duck flies on into the early morning rising sun over Grapevine Lake: 800mm, f8, 1/4000 sec., ISO 200.
Cheers.

Model Anita. 6-7) Model Lucinda. All photos made with Sony A9III, Sony A1 II cameras ,and Sony 85mm f1.4 GM II lens. Click on each photo to see the full frame. Cheers

Just back in the USA from a 2500 mile trek around Thailand, whew 20,000 exposures still to edit, LOL. But I was back just in time to join friend and fellow International Photography Group member Kapil Poul as we attended the PPA's Imaging USA massive annual Conference, held this year in my current hometown of Grapevine, Texas at the fabulous Ga***rd Texan Resort.

One of my all-time favorite photogs, Jason Lanier came in from one of his longtime photojournalism projects around the world, and conducted a private workshop for a handful of photographers where we all got to learn from this master.

With two wonderful models Courtney Campbell (black and white dress) , and Edona Etemi (orange gown) , and six photographers of varied experiences and backgrounds, Jason and an assistant, we made photos around the resort under their massive atrium roof.

This longtime pro, who has photographed models around the world, and taught and mentored many photographers, still was thrilled to expand my knowledge and learn somethings new. It was a blast for two and a half hours as we all shared the time and made our own creative choices along with the creative models and Jason's creative mind, and we got Jason's instant feedback, critique, and words of wisdom.

All my photos were made with my 50mp Sony A1 II camera, and lenses including a Viltrox 16mm f1.8; Sony 24mm f1.4 GM, and Sony 85mm f1.4 GM II. We all shared a combination of one Godox AD600 Pro (600WS) strobe in a large diffuser, and two constant LED light panels from Nanlights (which we could dial up different colors). You can see them in the wide BTS shot on the bridge, #5 picture .

Click on each photos to see the full frames. Cheers, and yes the Thailand selects will be coming over the next months.
