Saving Files for Clients

How long will I see your images?

One of the things I promise my clients is that I will save their digital photos for as long as I can. Hopefully forever. And I know clients ask me how long before I delete their files because other photographers have told them that they have 14 or 21 days to order and any poses they don’t buy will be deleted.

I get it. It’s a sound business strategy. Take people who are already emotional about their child’s portraits, create urgency and force people into quick decisions so they spend more money. I’ve heard all the same advice from the industry “gurus” about how to maximize your profits.

But the thing is…I’m bad at business. Gleefully so.

I’m not going to delete your files or even threaten to to get you to hurry your purchase, because you never know what people are going through.

A woman emailed me recently to finally order portraits of her grandchildren from their senior portrait sessions. These sessions were done in 2018 and 2021, and their parents never ordered any of the images because they were suffering one family tragedy after another. In fact, both parents are gone now. And this woman just wants portraits of her grandchildren.

It took me a little time to hunt them all down, but I have them. And I don’t care if she only orders one portrait of each. I’m not interest in profitmaxxing this session. Portraits are priceless. My family photos are the things I would save from a fire.

So, here’s to being bad at business but good at being a human, and hopefully good at being an artist.

Brownie Camera

This week I decided to try out this old Brownie camera that my son Braden and his girlfriend Payge bought at an antique store. I’ve never used one before so this will be an adventure.

This camera is likely over 100 years old, though I haven’t managed to pinpoint its exact age. It’s in pretty rough shape. You can see that there is some water damage. But I opened it up and the shutter seemed to work, but this is where my lack of knowledge about these cameras betrayed me a little. More on that later.

It was a sunny day so I decided to use 100 speed film because of the camera’s exposure control limitations. I loaded up a roll of black and white 120 film and headed out for some test shots. IF the camera was working, there was a chance I could get some decent photographs.

Unfortunately almost everything was a challenge. Structural issues meant that the film didn’t advance smoothly and ultimately wound onto the take-up reel a bit crooked. So when I tried to use my Lab Box to develop it, it ended up mangling some of the frames. I did eventually get the film loaded into a development tank but it was a challenge and the film was damaged.

When it came out of the developing tank it looked like I did at least get a few frames, but when I brought them into photoshop they were all over-exposed. This one looked like I had double-exposed it, and this one looked like it had motion blur.

At first I thought these meant that the shutter war firing slow. But after examining slow motion video of the shutter - I think what is happening is that the film is being exposed a second time when I reset the shutter. It’s not supposed to, but the mechanism to prevent that apparently isn’t working.

There’s an easy fix, which is to put my finger or a piece of tape over the lens opening when I reset the exposure lever. So that’s probably what I’ll try next. Stay tuned.

Daffodil Watercolor Cards

It’s been an overwhelming couple of weeks for a lot of reasons.

So I thought I would relax a little by working on some watercolor cards. Because the daffodils are blooming in our woods and the daffodil show is coming up, I decided to paint daffodils. Of course I forgot that I’m terrible at painting daffodils.

I have tried multiple times and I’m never happy with them. So I got out my sketchbook and tried some variations. I swatched out colors that I thought would work. I tried wet into wet styles and color combinations.

In have pages of attempts. I tried a more detailed line drawing.

For cards I also want to come up with a way to paint them rather quickly. I can’t spend half an hour per card, so I’m always trying to simplify the shapes and make them visibly daffodils but in a loose, impressionist way.

I think I finally started to get the hang of it after a while, but I’m still not completely satisfied. I made about half a dozen and will likely try again this weekend.

Anyway, stop by the gallery this week or next if you’re in the market for some patently mediocre daffodil watercolor cards.
