Green heron ~

This small heron is usually found at the edge of bodies of water, since it has shorter legs than some of its heron relatives. They are often hunched down, as seen in the second image, and almost appear to be a different bird with that stretched out neck and raised crest. They stretch out their necks during courtship and to appear larger or more alert - and this seems to be a successful adaptation, since that raised crest and neck makes it look like it just woke up!

False sunflower ~

These have proven to be quite prolific in our yard. I started with plants instead of seeds, and had three or four. I cannot count how may I have now, they reseeded everywhere in the last year, and I'm very happy to have them!

The yard is alive with bees right now, and I'm happy to be helping them. It is also alive with grasshoppers...so many grasshoppers! I'm sure I'll be sharing a photograph of them too at one point, they are everywhere!
