Western Cattle Egret (WECE) in adult breeding plumage. They are commonly found in grassy fields instead of near water like most other herons. They eat insects and small animals. WECE nest in large colonies, often with other types of herons. Their nests are flimsy platforms made of sticks. Males bring in materials while females work on construction. Typically WECE lay clutches of 3 to 4 eggs, but occasionally have as many as 5 eggs. Incubation takes between 22 and 28 days.

Least Bittern | The smallest member of North American herons. They are only 11 to 14 inches tall with a wingspan of 16 to 18 inches and weigh less than a Mourning Dove. While common, they secretive and easily overlooked. They use their long toes to grasp vertical reeds and cattails. This allows them to hunt in water that is too deep for traditional wading. When alarmed they stretch their neck straight up, bill to the sky, feathers flat to mimic reeds swaying in the wind.
