Some days I despise how far technology has come, other days I appreciate it.

Like today when I was at the pumpkin patch cutting sunflowers for a tabletop bouquet. I did not have my camera, but I made do with the little one in my pocket for this beautiful shot.

Sunflowers are celebrated for their vibrant colors, but if you've been following me for any amount of time, you know I love a good black and white image.

There is just something so calming, peaceful, and real when an image is stripped of its color and the raw, unfiltered, simplistic beauty shines through. (And that is why I love photography, still images that have the power to make us feel.)

Last summer, my sunflower pictures were against a brilliant blue sky and it made the colors of the flower pop.

This year, I'm enjoying the muted colors of the flowers against the ethereal glow of the sun setting.

No matter the species there’s always that one (or two) who refuse to look at the camera in a group photo! 😂😂

Photography is all about capturing light, and while sunset images are obviously not my strong suit, these image show the difference in how my camera captures and processes that light.

The two peachy sunsets were taken with the field in focus, while the intense red images had the sun as their focus. A simple reminder that a change in your focus can alter how you view the world around you!

As promised, here are the black and white images from yesterday's grasshoppers.

I think the black and white amplifies the alien look to these arthropods, would you agree?

It's grasshopper season!

Not quite sure how I managed these macro shots without them jumping away, but I'm definitely happy I got them! 😊

(If you want to be really creeped out by their alien look, check back tomorrow when I share the black and white images! 😉)

All summer long, I have seen Monarchs and Swallowtails as I drive around North Dakota, but never in my backyard. It seems the only ones that like my backyard are the Cabbage White or Clouded Sulphur butterflies.

Over the weekend, I was blessed to have an Easter Tiger Swallowtail visit me while I was out in my yard (and my dogs didn't chase it away!).

I wish I could have used my macro lens, but he wouldn't let me get too close, so I had to use my telephoto lens. 🤷‍♀️

I tried to get some pictures of the little house sparrows that have been enjoying our backyard the other night, but they flew away as soon as I opened the backdoor. So I sat outside and waited for them to return, they never did. However I did get to see this American robin hunt for his dinner.
