What a great time at the Tower Show! So many fantastic interpretations of the tower template. All the pieces are for sale, and it was fun to watch people take them off the wall and walk them over to the table to purchase. There were some really wonderful pieces! I’d be in trouble if I had more wall space at home, haha. Glad I was able to make it to the opening.

My first year joining in on Tower Show fun! My piece is a collage of two photographs from the canal. I also got my mom in on it, her work is a mixed media piece. Looking forward to seeing all the ways other local artists have interpreted the tower template.

The show opens on April 23rd from 7-9 PM at Union Channel (240 3rd Ave). Come check out our work in person! If you can’t make it to the opening, the exhibition will be on view Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6 PM through May 17th.

The call was for cell phone photos of Gowanus, of which I have probably a billion. That said, if there's something I think is a 'real' shot, I'll usually pull out my trusty so going through my cell phone camera roll was an interesting flash back. Honestly, it was super fun! The image Miska picked is a newer one, from September of 2025. Just for fun, here are views from the same spot in 2019 and 2022. (2019 photo was with a Sony, 2022 is a cell phone shot, as obvious by the garish coloring of the sunset!)

Thanks and for including me in the show. Hoping to make it over to see it in person.

Frozen Gowanus. The ice on the canal is constantly shifting and changing, and so different, bridge to bridge. Catching as many looks at it as I can before the weather shifts.
This cold snap has been.... intense. Today finally felt doable for a walk with my little stowaway. Just under freezing, practically balmy!

Gowanus wandering after the storm.
Walking while wearing a baby is a lesson in patience and limitations. Unshoveled sidewalks are more treacherous. Blocked crosswalks and huge puddles of melt are obstacles I can't just leap over. I can't scramble up snow banks to get a slightly different perspective, and had to make the call to give up on a vantage point when mere meters away more times than I'd like. But yet. Cold weather gets great naps and I'm learning how to adjust my camera without bopping him on the head. (Most of the time anyway!)

Happy holidays from our family to yours! 🎄🎁❄️☃️

Our first year making a photo holiday card! With limited (sleep deprived) brain space and a baby who hasn’t learned how to pose yet we went with “mural on the sanitation warehouse” + holiday sweaters as our theme 😝

Thanks for the push to make the card :-)

Black crowned night herons were the first birds I really noticed along the Gowanus Canal - speckled juveniles with their glowing red eyes. Grumpy old man adults, sulking along bulkheads. But sadly, earlier this year shared research that showed the species is in critical decline here and across the Northeast and may disappear entirely from the harbor as soon as 2035. So when canal-watchers and started spotting this group earlier this summer, we all rejoiced! I've seen a few together, but never when I had my camera with me. What joy when Gary shared that he spotted 7 along the canal and I also happened to be heading that direction! One of the things I really love about photographing birds in such public places (this is in the turning basin right next to the Whole Foods esplanade) is that I get a chance to chat with curious passers-by. “They’re black crowned night herons! Yeah, there are 7 of them, do you see the one over there in the tree? This is great because they’re in decline in the area, and we’re super happy to see them.”
I’m not sure where their colony is. A tree over the canal? Over the Gowanus Bay? Maybe they’re tucked away in the old Grain Terminal building in Red Hook? Wherever it is I hope they like it enough to stick around!

Always worth it to drag yourself out of bed- you can always take a nap later!!
