Here is a lesser-imaged ‘creepy’ nebula which can be captured year-round if you have a view of Polaris. Our North Star is just out of frame to the right of this image. This is a small part of the much larger Polaris Flare molecular cloud. The name Cthulhu Nebula was given to this part a few years ago by Todd Stephens on Astrobin, and I’ve wanted to shoot a close-up ever since. With the start of Galaxy Season, it seemed like a good time to put in some hours with my rig at Starfront Observatories in Texas. It came together pretty quick. I even had time to explore this area in Ha and OIII, but not much came of that and I didn’t include those filters in the final presentation.
