Before every senior session, I send out a questionnaire to learn a little more about each senior and what feels important to them right now.

When Benjamin filled his out, his answer was simple: “My truck.”

And honestly, that told me everything I needed to know.

One of my biggest goals with senior portraits is making sure the images actually feel like the person in them. If his truck was important to him, then that’s what we were going to focus on.

Benjamin also came into the session with a very specific image he wanted to recreate, which made the session even more fun for me creatively. I love when seniors come in with ideas that feel personal to them because it helps make the session collaborative and unique to who they are right now.

We spent the session creating images that felt natural, personal, and true to this season of his life, and I genuinely had such a great time working with him.

His mom later left the kindest Google review and shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the session, which honestly made my day. Seeing families excited about both the experience and the final images is exactly what I hope for.

Emma told me before her senior session that she didn’t want her photos to feel overly posed, stiff, or too “perfect,” and honestly, I think that’s something a lot of seniors are looking for right now.

The best senior sessions usually happen when there’s room to move, explore, laugh, and just exist in the moment a little instead of trying to hold a pose every second. During Emma’s session at Maymont, we focused less on perfect posing and more on natural movement, genuine expressions, and creating images that actually felt like her.

That doesn’t mean there’s no direction during the session — I’m still guiding the entire time — but my goal is to make the interaction feel relaxed enough that personality can come through naturally. Sometimes the in-between moments end up being the images people love most years later.

Emma brought such an easy, grounded energy to her session, and Maymont gave us the perfect backdrop for photos that felt timeless without feeling overly formal.

There is something incredibly meaningful about being invited into a family’s home during those first days with a new baby. It’s such a tender season — full of quiet moments and deep love.

I will always believe there is something especially powerful about in-home sessions. The nursery they carefully prepared, the mirror they built together, the paintings created by Joan’s namesake grandmother, the blankets lovingly knitted by family and friends — these details become part of the story too. They hold history, connection, and love in ways that can’t be recreated anywhere else.

Years from now, these images won’t just remind Celia and Chris what Joan looked like as a newborn. They’ll remember the home they brought her into, the care woven into every corner, and what it felt like to begin this new chapter together.

Thank you, Celia and Chris, for trusting me to document such a precious and fleeting season for your family.

Meet Ashley: Ashley wanted images that would help clients better understand her massage therapy business and the unique experiences she can create for her clients with a variety of massage therapy techniques.

Having personally experienced Ashley’s work myself, I can say she is incredibly skilled and experienced at what she does. She has a real talent for being intentional in the way she cares for her clients and the experience she provides from beginning to end.

Professional branding images can make such a difference for small businesses. They help create consistency across websites and social media, build trust with potential clients, and allow people to connect with the personality behind the business before they ever book an appointment.

Branding sessions give businesses the chance to show more than just a service — they help tell the story behind the people who make it all happen.

For this session, we focused a lot on light, nature, and creating images that felt thoughtful and real. I wanted to create an image that symbolized leaving childhood behind and stepping into whatever comes next - and I love what we created so much.

Senior year sits in such a strange, meaningful space between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming. I always love when seniors want their session to tell a story about that season of life.

We spent the evening chasing beautiful light, experimenting creatively, and creating images that felt authentic to him.

Family sessions rarely go exactly as planned… and adding a dog with a giant personality into the mix makes things even more entertaining.

The Haley Family brought their Pomeranian mix along for their session this year, and he fully understood the assignment.

Some kids step in front of the camera and need a little time to warm up.

And then there are kids like Cora.

From the moment we started, she was completely engaged, expressive, playful, and confident in the best way. She took direction so naturally, had fantastic instincts for posing, and brought so much personality into every frame. Honestly just an all-around fantastic kid to photograph.

One of the biggest things parents ask me about child actor headshots is:
“What makes a good headshot for kids?”

A few things I always keep in mind during sessions:

• Authentic expressions matter more than perfect posing
• Casting directors want to see your child, not a heavily edited version of them
• Variety is important — smiles, thoughtful looks, confident expressions, playful energy
• Kids photograph best when they feel relaxed and are allowed to move, chat, and have fun
• Great child actor headshots should capture personality first

Cora absolutely nailed all of that. Her gallery is full of images that feel natural, expressive, and genuinely her — which is exactly what casting directors are looking for.

She was such a joy to photograph.

When Lindsey reached out about portraits for her new website, she already had a clear vision for how she wanted her brand to feel. She wanted images that matched the aesthetic of her site and color palette while still feeling natural, sophisticated, inviting, and professional.

That balance is so important with branding portraits. You want images that look polished and elevated, but still feel like you. The goal isn’t stiff or overly posed photos — it’s creating images that help people instantly feel connected to the person behind the business.

From wardrobe choices to locations to subtle color coordination, every detail of Lindsey’s session was chosen intentionally so her photos would flow seamlessly with her new website and create a cohesive experience for her clients.

I love helping business owners create portraits that not only look beautiful, but truly support the story they want their brand to tell.

Michelle recently reached out because she needed updated headshots to celebrate a new job opportunity, and I loved getting to create images that felt confident, approachable, and true to who she is. One of my favorite parts of this work is helping people walk away feeling comfortable in front of the camera — especially when the photos will represent them professionally for years to come.

And honestly? Receiving a thoughtful review afterward means so much to me. Small business owners pour a lot of heart into what they do, and kind words from clients truly make a difference. I never take that trust or support for granted.

So grateful Michelle chose me for this exciting season in her life. Congratulations again on the new job!
