We love getting to shoot weddings in our own backyard! When we talked to these two about their vision for their day, they said they wanted it to be one big party and to ensure that all of their guests would have a great time. They didn’t want all the fluff, just to spend time together and have a blast. It’s safe to say that’s exactly what happened. After spending the afternoon at a cliffside in Palos Verdes with their closest friends and family, we headed over to their restaurant, .house , where the rest of their people met them for the most fun reception. They had football on the TV, ring pops and glow sticks for the kids, the best food and drinks, and cut their cake with a Persian warrior sword! To top it all off, the groom gave the sweetest speech followed by a crepe cart to end the night.

One question we get all the time is if you should do an engagement shoot. Selfishly, we want to quickly answer “YES”! Because it gives us the opportunity to really get to know our couples and engagements are some of our favorite sessions. But honestly, the answer is “only if it feels valuable to you”. Here are some questions to ask yourself that might help you decide:

-Is it important to you to document and capture who you are as a couple, the energy you have together right now, before embarking on your next adventure and marriage?

- Do you look forward to someday looking back at photos of the two of you together in this season before you were married?

- Does a date night and stepping away for some intentional time together sound like fun right now? Or more stressful?

- Do you just want some photos for a save the date?

- Does it feel like just another thing to check off your to do list?

To us, engagement photos are so much more than a pretty ‘Save the Date’. They’re a way to slow down and really spend some time together during a busy wedding planning season; they’re an excuse to get dressed up and go on an intentional adventure together; they’re the best way to help you remember this last chapter before being married; and they help tell your story for generations to come. If that resonates with you - YES! Do an engagement shoot. But if it does’t, no worries. Don’t feel obligated to do one.

Wanna know one of the best locations for your photos? Your home.

The day we were scheduled to take these it was a full on blizzard and -20 degrees outside, which was less than ideal for the perfect forest location we had picked out. Rather than reschedule, we decided to do a cozy in-home session and are SO glad we did! It was the perfect way to document so many firsts for these two - their first dog together, their first house, and their first baby on the way. And now baby girl will have these to document her firsts as well - the home she’ll take her first steps in, her childhood dogs, her first bedroom. We are so excited that she’ll get this glimpse into her parent’s life to look back on, ask questions about, prompt stories. To see the wedding photos her parents hung on the walls, the kitchen they danced in, how in love they were. This is exactly why photography is so meaningful to us.

Each year we take photos for our anniversary and they’ve become one of my favorite things to look back on. Most of the time it’s a few self portraits or quick snaps taken while traveling. But this was a year I wanted to freeze in time a little extra. To really memorize who we are together today. So we took a little trip to Washington to have our photos taken by . And boy are we obsessed with the art he created.

So, this is us - 6 years married after a year of milestones and adventures we’d like to relive over and over again.

New on the blog: Maria and Sean’s South Lake Tahoe Wedding! Go check it out!

This was seriously one of the most fun weddings. A few of our favorite moments:

1. The amount of Soulja Boy-ing (yes it’s a verb) the guys did the entire day.

2. The bride diving into her dress.

3. The groom watching Maria and her dad dance. Not a dry eye in the place.

4. The bride holding the microphone while the best man put his pants back on during his speech.

5. Scream-singing “Dear Maria, Count Me In” at the end of the night.

Ever feel moved by a photo? One that stops you in your tracks? A blend of art and honest documentation, that just pulls you straight back in time? That’s why we do this.

We believe photography is about so much more than a pretty aesthetic. It's about freezing the fleeting moments and the overwhelmingly large emotions. Photos fill the space in a story where no words could possibly be big enough.

All of those seemingly small, in between moments - those are what make you, you. Those are what your story is made of, but they’re often left off the page. Because how could one possibly explain in words how you feel looking into his eyes, knowing you are home. Or the sheer amount of joy that fills you from head to toe when she laughs. Photos tell the story that words can't for generations to come, and we are so dang inspired by that.

Scared you’ll feel awkward during your photos? We promise, you won’t.

We have crafted our experience to focus on you - not the camera - so much so that we’re continuously told our sessions feel more like a date night than a photo shoot. By the end, we hope you forget you’re even in front of the camera! It’s a time to disconnect from the rest of the world and be present with the ones you love. We will have you frolicking around, snuggling up, and hopefully laughing like crazy.

This is just one more reason we recommend having an engagement shoot *with your same wedding photographer* before your wedding! You definitely don’t want to feel anxious or distracted by being in front of the camera on your wedding day. An engagement shoot beforehand helps put those nerves at ease and get comfortable with your photographer and the way they shoot!

We try to take anniversary photos together every year. So when these two asked us to do an anniversary session and let us know their goal is to have photos taken every anniversary, we were extra excited! There is something so special about documenting your love each year and then looking back at how it’s grown over time. But it’s also about more than just having the photos. During anniversary sessions we always encourage our couples to reminisce on their past year - favorite moments, biggest hurdles, how they’ve grown. It’s the perfect opportunity to set aside some time and intentionally reflect on everything you’ve overcome and celebrated together.
