First time visit to The Stage Restaurant & Cafe in downtown Keene yesterday after moving oldest into his dorm at Keene State College.

In addition to the sidewalk dining area, there is a narrow ivy-covered alley between the restaurant and the church next door that they call "The Grotto." This is just a beautiful and quiet little place to eat, and you'd never know you were literally steps off of busy Central Square.
We enjoyed a great meal and wonderful service, although we felt bad that our server had to come all the way outside and around the building to check on us.

🍸 Hail Caesar: vodka with olive and pepperoncini brine, and a caesar infusion
🦀 Crab Brulee dip: a fusion of crab rangoon and creme brulee, compete with carmelized sugar layer on top that you have to crack open. The wonton chips were perfect with this. Fun appetizer to eat!
🇰🇷 Korean Popcorn Chicken: had a sweet and spicy gochujang glaze, and the carrot ginger slaw was absolutely perfect with the chicken.
🍒 Oh Honey Don't: Bar Hill Gin and tart cherry juice, with notes of lemon, honey and vanilla.
🎭 Stage Carbonara: This is absolutely not the traditional Roman carbonara, this is their own creative spin on the classic. It's more of a linguini tossed in a smoky red pepper cream sauce with bacon and prosciutto. Very interesting and different, and quite a large serving, too. The garlic bread was especially good.

Throwback to 2021........When August rolls around, I always think back to a really memorable meal I had. In August 2021 I did a solo trip to Chicago to eat a bunch of stuff, which I very happily did. One of my favorite meals was at Rick Bayless's restaurant Frontera Grill which opened in 1987.
It was during Covid, so the whole block was sectioned off, and there was tented seating outside and I sat basically in the road I think. All I could smell was the amazing aroma of tortillas cooking. These tortillas were life changing. They were so soft and fluffy, and I just wanted to pet them. SO delicious. My Topolo margaritas were on point, and so tart and crispy cold.

I had this BEAUTIFUL little appetizer sampler that contained (if I remember correctly): tuna ceviche, flautas, gorgeous guacamole, and an empanada. Then I had tacos which sounds so oversimplified. They were perfect in every way, with those incredible heirloom corn tortillas and the 2 salsas. It was such an amazing meal that I'm sure I'll always remember it.

We went to the prettiest little place last night for dinner in Wilton...... the Hilltop Café. What a gem! For dinner service you can sit outdoors in the open air in their beautiful farmhouse "backyard" surrounded by the barn of Abbot Hill Creamery, lush shrubbery and a gorgeous mature maple tree. We sure did pick the right evening for our reservation because the weather was perfect and so incredibly comfortable.

Such an incredibly lovely rural place, and we are so lucky to have little country spots like this in NH.

My favorite thing we had was the Beer Battered Chile Relleno Popper for the appetizer. The fire-roasted poblano chile was large and amazingly delicious and stuffed with jalapeno cream cheese. The housemade salsa verde was loaded with cilantro and lime and was just so fresh and flavorful. Delicious! And no, we opted NOT to get the Abbot Hill cheeseboard. LOL. My whole life is a cheeseboard and sometimes I just gotta take a break from cheese.

Hilltop Cafe only does dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, and they do require reservations. They have a small number of tables, a small kitchen and a small staff. Enjoy this hidden gem on a lovely summer evening---believe it or not, summer is already over halfway done!

I'm not someone who can go too long without Mexican food, and when I can't remember the last time I had it, that's the time. 🚨 Emergency visit to Nuevo Vallarta Mexican Restaurant today. 🚨 Cooler weather made a great lunch on the patio with a margarita flight, queso fundido (probably my favorite food in the whole wide world), and a ton of enchiladas. Day: made!!

Lovely supper yesterday evening at Putnam's Waterview Restaurant. It was crazy hot, but we sat on their beautiful patio anyway. The order of handcut onion rings is just as huge as it's always been!

From one end of the US to the other....... 2 months ago I did a food tour in Key West, and fast forward to today.....

Had a great day in Portland today, taking food tour #45!! This one was the Old Port Culinary Walking Tour with Maine Day Ventures. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Old Port which is close to me but not somewhere that I get to all that often.

I do have fond memories of a couple of past trips to Portland. During Covid, I brought my young sons here and we did a fun lobster cruise with Lucky Catch where they got to pull up lobster traps, hold lobsters, and chuck the traps back down. Then in 2022 I saw for the first time my very favorite band The War On Drugs at the State Theater and that was amazing.

So for today, I returned with a free hotel night that I needed to use, and it was a good excuse to add to my food tour list. We ate our way around the Old Port, including these highlights:
• seafood chowder at Gilbert's Chowder House Portland
• a lobster roll at Rigby Yard
• a fantastic fish taco at Andy's Old Port Pub
• delicious gelato at Gelato Fiasco

Thanks to Maine Day Ventures for a fantastic tour with Marcia! See less

Cowboy Cantina is now open in Weare!

We got to try it on Thursday, and it was already hopping just after 4:00. It's in the space that the Stark House Tavern used to be in, and they've changed it up with some fun southwestern decor. The thing you notice immediately from the parking lot is the amazing aroma of barbecue coming from the smoker and the grills.
They've been open just barely a week, so they didn't have a printed drink menu. I just chose the house margarita to see what it would be like, and I enjoyed it. It comes in a fun tiki-style glass with big flaked salt on the rim.

Appetizer: We got the Chorizo Fundido Fries, and wow! I think this was my favorite thing. The chorizo had really nice flavor and a little kick of spice, and of course queso fundido is probably my favorite thing on the planet. I really enjoyed this one. They serve it on a paper on a little tray, and I don't think the paper is the way to go because it starts shredding and breaking down.

Steak Tips: Dave got the steak tips and they were absolutely delicious. He also got a little side of street corn and we both loved it. It's nicely spiced, and has a yummy cheese/mayo sauce.

I was pleasantly overwhelmed at all the great-sounding choices on the menu, and it was hard to make up my mind. I went with the Burrito Bowl which was grilled chicken over their southwest rice, topped with lettuce, tomato, and guac. There were a couple of black beans in there too. I think it was supposed to have a sour cream and poblano ranch drizzle, and also crispy tortilla strips but I don't remember seeing those. Those would have made it extra good! I couldn't eat the whole thing.
All the food that I saw coming out looked great. I saw people ordering wings, tacos, steak and cheese subs, and wraps. Everything looked good.

It's a small place! I think I counted maybe 10ish tables? We will definitely be going back. They have a huge menu, and there are still so many things I want to try.

Beautiful Lobster Tails from Modern Pastry Shop are at Angela's Pasta and Cheese Shop. I can't tell you how many of these bad boys I have hauled back from Boston on the bus. I would head over to the North End, grab my cash-only lobster tail, and walk back down to the bus station with my little box in hand. This is one pastry I can never finish all by myself.
