Cowboy Cantina is now open in Weare!

We got to try it on Thursday, and it was already hopping just after 4:00. It's in the space that the Stark House Tavern used to be in, and they've changed it up with some fun southwestern decor. The thing you notice immediately from the parking lot is the amazing aroma of barbecue coming from the smoker and the grills.
They've been open just barely a week, so they didn't have a printed drink menu. I just chose the house margarita to see what it would be like, and I enjoyed it. It comes in a fun tiki-style glass with big flaked salt on the rim.

Appetizer: We got the Chorizo Fundido Fries, and wow! I think this was my favorite thing. The chorizo had really nice flavor and a little kick of spice, and of course queso fundido is probably my favorite thing on the planet. I really enjoyed this one. They serve it on a paper on a little tray, and I don't think the paper is the way to go because it starts shredding and breaking down.

Steak Tips: Dave got the steak tips and they were absolutely delicious. He also got a little side of street corn and we both loved it. It's nicely spiced, and has a yummy cheese/mayo sauce.

I was pleasantly overwhelmed at all the great-sounding choices on the menu, and it was hard to make up my mind. I went with the Burrito Bowl which was grilled chicken over their southwest rice, topped with lettuce, tomato, and guac. There were a couple of black beans in there too. I think it was supposed to have a sour cream and poblano ranch drizzle, and also crispy tortilla strips but I don't remember seeing those. Those would have made it extra good! I couldn't eat the whole thing.
All the food that I saw coming out looked great. I saw people ordering wings, tacos, steak and cheese subs, and wraps. Everything looked good.

It's a small place! I think I counted maybe 10ish tables? We will definitely be going back. They have a huge menu, and there are still so many things I want to try.

Beautiful Lobster Tails from Modern Pastry Shop are at Angela's Pasta and Cheese Shop. I can't tell you how many of these bad boys I have hauled back from Boston on the bus. I would head over to the North End, grab my cash-only lobster tail, and walk back down to the bus station with my little box in hand. This is one pastry I can never finish all by myself.

We got a chance to try The Millers Tavern-Manchester NH on Elm St. yesterday, and we really enjoyed it! It's been on my list since they opened. Dave and I have been on a bang-bang shrimp kick, and we got their appetizer and loved it. Super creamy, with nice big shrimp. It went well with my spicy margarita. Then, Dave got the smash burger which was surprisingly delicious. We couldn't figure out what flavors were going on but it was crazy good. And I really enjoyed my Panko Crusted Chicken, with a parmesan cream sauce. I am literally a sucker for pretty much anything with a "cream sauce." I'm not really one for vegetables so I didn't really try those but they looked nice on the plate 🙂
Beautiful food with beautiful presentation, and LOVELY natural light--yes please!!

The 🦐🦞🍤 season is here! Not all the seafood places at the coast are open yet, but BG's Boat House Restaurant and Marina is! We had a very enjoyable and peaceful lunch there yesterday..... the sun was shining, the restaurant was quiet.

We passed Petey's on the way home, and it was like a bomb went off. Cars stacked up all the way down the road, throngs of people going in and out. No thanks. BGs is a much more enjoyable experience. And I had my huge plate of fried shrimp in the sun, so this mama was very happy.

The Ernest Hemingway home in Key West is really interesting, and worth a visit even if (like me) you don't really know much about Hemingway. I did learn that he was a very interesting guy, quite intense and adventurous, and definitley a celebrity in his own time. I've heard him described as a brilliant writer but a terrible person. The house itself is wonderful and beautifully preserved, including all the famous cats. The cats are lounging everywhere, and they're very friendly. The whole place honestly smells like cat p*e, indoors and outdoors. But what are you gonna do?

It reminded me a lot of visiting Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Mexico City, with some parallels of personal tragedy. Must be that 1930s tropical garden vibe.

Food Tour #44!

As you know, I love food tours, and I've been doing them for 10 years now in 16 different cities (and counting!) In Key West, my son and I took the Southernmost Food Tasting and Cultural Walking tour by Key West Food Tours. We enjoyed the tour very much, with 5 tastings and 3 hours of looking, listening, and learning. We went to several less-touristy places that we never would have found ourselves and that made it more special.

🇨🇺 We had Cuban mojo pork, with maduras and black beans at the amazing 50 year old Cuban restaurant El Siboney Restaurant 🇨🇺

⚓️ The Rumrunner drink from The Speakeasy Inn and Rum Bar was delicious, and a nod to Key West's prohibition history. They provided a nonalcoholic option for my teen.

🐚 Conch Fritters! We tried these Key West staples with key lime aioli at Mangoes Restaurant Key West, along with Conch Chowder. This one wasn't really my favorite, but I was glad to try it. 🐚

🍍 Right across the street is Kaya Island Eats, and WOW. I would have returned to this Caribbean-Hawaiian fusion restaurant time and time again if we'd had more time. There, we sampled their Reggae Fish: Jamaican jerk mahi mahi with goat cheese and mango pineapple salsa.

🍋‍🟩 Finally, we ended the tour with Key Lime Pie for dessert from Cuban Coffee Queen. We'd actually had breakfast there the day before (and sandwiches for the fishing trip) and everything we had was excellent.... the Cuban bread and the Cafe con Leche were all wonderful.

Thank you to Key West Food Tours for a wonderful afternoon!

Just got back from Key West for April vacation, and probably my favorite place that I visited was Blue Heaven. Sure, the food was delicious and the meringue on their key lime pie is a mile high, but the place itself is just such an experience. It's all outdoors on an ancient brick floor, all underneath a canopy of mature tropical trees that seem to defy gravity. It's shady, and drippy, and there's chickens running around freely. It's such a vibe. 🐓🌴🍋‍🟩

I was excited to try the beautiful Irish pub Coopershill - Peterborough yesterday! The Irish "nachos" were wonderful, and the bangers & mash with colcannon and Guiness onion gravy was flavorful and warming. I think this is a place that does all forms of potato very well. Drinks were great too!

They have a beautiful little area for outdoor sidewalk seating that I'd love to try in the summer.
