Forgot to post the final belated National Park week post yesterday. So here it is this morning! This one comes from Glacier National Park. I've only visited once - in the fall of 2022, but hope to potentially go there for wildflower season this summer for a few days! However, it was fantastic in the fall! While I expected the Going-to-the-Sun road to be my favorite part, and it was fantastic, the Swiftcurrent Lake area proved to be a stunner. The light was fantastic up there, even 3 hours after sunrise that morning. And I found this family of black bears just a bit down the road.

Here's another round of National Park photos. Technically, it ends today, but I will have one more post tomorrow since I was late to the game. These photos come from Mount Rainier National Park in Washington! Most of these were taken in 2018, though I have some of a great wildflower season from years before that I may go back and re-edit one of these days.

Here's another round of National Park photography! This one comes from the canyons, mesas and arches of Utah's national parks. It's a place I need to go spend more time in - especially Zion in the fall. Hoping to do that this year actually. Here we have three photos - the first is the famous Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. The second is from Arches National Park. And the final one is a much older image from Zion that's nearly ten years old now. Enjoy!

Here's another round of National Park photos. I was going to do Yosemite, but still have quite a few images from other national parks to get through, so I'm combining Yosemite with a few other California images from the redwoods and Joshua Tree. Out of these, I've been to the redwoods more than Yosemite, but the light I got in my short 16 or so hours in Yosemite were unreal. I know I've told this story before, but I had one evening (the night before Memorial Day in 2019) to shoot Yosemite. I arrived as a late season snow storm was clearing to a beautiful sunset at the famous Tunnel View area. The next morning, I showed up to completely different settings. Fog! Which made for another seriously cool moment. I spent multiple hours that morning driving in and out of the fog, exploring the valley floor. It is still one of my favorite moments in a National Park to this day.

And just a few words on the other two - funny enough, both were taken on the same trip as the Yosemite images. I had a great deal on a one way rental car from Phoenix to Seattle. My first stop was Joshua Tree for sunrise. Later in the trip, I caught some rhododendron blooms in the redwoods. It was a pretty awesome trip, to say the least!

It's National Park Week and I'm back with my second post for it. This time we have a pair that needs no introduction. Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park! These two parks stand together in the northwest corner of Wyoming in the Rocky Mountains. Yellowstone is famous for being the oldest national park in the United States, while Grand Teton has some of the most photogenic mountains in the world! Both are known for the diverse wildlife - from grizzly bears to wolves and bison to elk, there is a lot of beauty in these two parks. Here are a few of my favorites from over the years!

This week is National Park week! I'm a bit behind since it started days ago, but figured I would make a few posts over the next few days highlighting some of my favorite images from America's National Park System.

First up is Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. This is where I grew up going as a kid all the way through my college years, taking disposable cameras and eventually my first "real" camera, a Nikon D80, where I spent multiple summers learning my craft. Here are just a couple of my favorite images from the past few years. I don't get out to RMNP as much as I used to, but I still try and go back once every few years in the fall to see if I can get a few new shots of the beautiful park.

Beautiful storm clouds tonight! I got a late start and missed the sunset entirely (which was beautiful, by the way). I raced out west to some wheat fields and caught the last hues of purple as the sun was long since down. I had to fix a lot of raindrops on the shot, along with pretty dark settings, but pulled this out. Hopefully the rest of you didn't have bad hail! Just a bit of rain and a lot of distant lightning here so far.

Waterfall Wednesday throwback to a day wandering the Flint HIlls chasing waterfalls.

The first is my favorite shot from Prather Creek Falls (or Chase Lake Falls) in the spillway of Chase County State Fishing Lake in the Flint Hills. I used this overhanging tree branch to add a little depth to an image that is usually taken straight on. I believe this was 2021 and everything was really green, with waterfalls that were pouring.

The second two are from Geary State Fishing Lake. Using the tiny cascades and rock placements as foregrounds allowed the photos to have a natural flow up to the main falls. All three were taken on a mostly cloudy day to control the amount of light coming in while still getting a silky smooth flow out of the falls.

"Spring at the Wamego Windmill"

I took a quick stop at the old Dutch windmill in Wamego last week when out photographing the burns. I wish I had taken a little more time looking for new compositions, but was just passing through and hoping to make it to a specific spot while the light was still good. That said, it was nice to make it to the windmill when both the redbuds and the tulips were in bloom. The light was fairly soft due to the smoke from nearby prescribed burns. Hope you enjoy!

Aloha Friday!

My wife said that when answering me on the phone earlier today and got me thinking I should post a few Hawaii photos. Here's a few of my favorites from Oahu! Maybe in a coming Friday I'll do another one from Maui and Kauai! So in honor of that, Aloha Friday everyone!

This past weekend, I took a trip out in the Flint Hills to photograph redbud trees in bloom, but found one of my favorite locations up near Manhattan in the middle of a prescribed burn! Not one to pass up the opportunity, I stayed way later than expected. Here are a few new images from that evening.

The burning of the Flint Hills is an annual tradition that takes place here in Kansas every spring. From around February to April, ranchers will run prescribed burns which helps maintain the tallgrass prairie ecosystem's health. It also controls weeds and mitigates wildfire risks. To see the grasses come to life just a couple of weeks after a burn is a testament to this practice which has been on-going for centuries, if not millennia. Native American's also practiced it. Going from a blackened ground to a bright green in spring also makes for some amazing photography opportunities. I can't wait to get out there in the coming months and see what new compositions will show themselves.

Last weekend, I went up into the Flint Hills hoping to find a great composition somewhere to catch some redbud trees in bloom. While I did find good blooms, I ended up coming away with a lot of different images I didn't expect. I managed to capture the windmill in Wamego with both the redbuds and tulips blooming. I found my favorite road up near Manhattan in a full prescribed burn, letting me photograph signs of early spring in the Flint Hills with firelines going down some of my favorite spots for compositions. But my first stop was one I had to drive back to. I took a road I hadn't been on in a while, between Alta Vista and Alma. Not too far past Alta Vista, I saw an owl just sitting on the side of the road, maybe 10 feet off the pavement in a field. I drove back and managed to get 3 shots off with my 100-400mm before it flew off. Sadly, that lens has been having some auto focus issues, so it's not the sharpest shot in the world, but thought it was still worth posting!
