May 31st, just when I was sad for all the warblers having moved on and I was thinking there is nothing new to photograph, I see this. A hummingbird gathering cattail seeds to make a nest! I've never seen this before. Nature always seems to be showing me new and beautiful things. ©Carol Freeman, all rights reserved.

May 23rd, it is getting more challenging every day to get photos of the birds with the leaves on the trees. This beauty was so hungry, and hopping from branch to branch, so that didn't help. Fortunately I was able to get a few shots of this female Blackburnian warbler between the leaves and the hops. ©Carol Freeman, all rights reserved.

May 20th, every year I have to remind myself, what is good for birders is not necessarily good for bird photography. I spent 3 hours this morning going where the birders said to go with poor results. harsh lighting, lots of leaves, birds up high. Then this afternoon I just found a spot with some likely habitat, and nice light, and I just sat and waited. It took awhile, but eventually this beautiful Bay-breasted Warbler flew in and started foraging. I may have only gotten one good shot today, but it was so worth it. ©Carol Freeman, all rights reserved.

May 16th, many warblers flitting about. As the month progresses it gets harder and harder to photograph these little jewels as the trees start getting more leaves. I was able to photograph this Black-throated Green Warbler at the Skokie Lagoons today. Lots of people made it even more challenging. ©Carol Freeman, all rights reserved.

May 15th, Storms last night kept me up quite late, and my day did not go exactly as planned. Finally around 5pm I was able to get out for a walk. I kept it close and went across the street to see if there might be something interesting in Techny North. After walking the very wet path for quite awhile, this Short-billed Dowitcher stepped out of the grass for a brief photo session. Wow, what a surprise, I never would have expected that. This is the first time I've ever gotten this close to a dowitcher. ©Carol Freeman, all rights reserved.
