One of the ponds at Big Bend with the Palmerton Range in the background.

Big Bend is undergoing major ecological restoration with the removal of invasive plants species and reintroduction of native ones. This vista, once hidden from view on the trail, has been cleared of invasives and replanted.

Our native blue flag iris (Iris versicolor). First blooms of the season at Big Bend.

While this looks similar to Siberian Iris, a common garden plant, Iris versicolor has wider leaves, tends to be shorter and has solid stems while those of Siberian iris are hollow. Siberian iris can also be an aggressive spreader.

It's peak Lupine bloom season and the Karner Blues are out and about along with relatives. I've been spending a lot of time watching them this week.

Blue lupine (Lupinus perennis) is a native. The other lupine species you see in the nursery and garden trade are primarily western US species. Those often seen in Maine and the Canadian maritime provinces are the invasive (Lupinus polyphyllus), a native of the Pacific Northwest.

Robin's Plantain (Erigeron pulchellus). This species grows in open woodlands and along the edges of woods but is also happy in full sun as shown in my own yard.

Ideally in the home landscape, this species is a ground cover and is a great way to replace large areas of turf. The flowers bloom from May into June and when they finish blooming they can be mowed. The basal rosette of leaves remains unharmed by the mower and is a drought resistant alternative to grass.

Attracts native bees and butterflies and is also a larval host for several moth species.
