Hot Dog On A Stick Update:
Like many of my good friends, I was very dismayed by the demolition of the original 1946 Hot Dog On A Stick stand, and I not only posted about it but also shared my feelings with various representatives of The company, FAT Brands. I wanted to share that I received a reply from the company today, saying that the City Of Santa Monica is the owner of the property and had demanded that they replace the building or lose their longtime concession. They said that they fought for 5 years to keep the original building and renovate and upgrade it to being up to the required health and safety codes, but the City as landlord made them either rebuild a new building or terminate operations at the location. I will share here what I shared with the company — that I can understand the necessity of complying with the local health and safety codes — but with such an active preservation community here in Li’s Angeles, any number of whom would have bent over backwards to thoughtfully move, dismantle and relocate or otherwise save much if not all of this historic local landmark. there’s simply NO justification for this historic treasure being demolished. The company rep sent to me the renderings of the new building — which at least in the current depiction look very much like the original stand — I have asked them if by any fortunate action they saved any part of the original front window, white lettered signs, counter, etc. and strongly suggested if so that they pivot to try and incorporate this original material back into the new structure … I have not heard back on that … but perhaps there can still be some part of what had been to exist for the future. The company representative was very courteous to me in my ongoing communications with him … I genuinely believe this was a case where something fell through the cracks on many levels … including with people like myself, not seeing stories that had been in newspapers and hearing about demolition plans that had been out in the public for a long time prior to this tragedy. It’s all in the rear view mirror now … but here’s what the new stand looks like.
