Fossil Falls adjacent
If you have explored US 395 then you may have taken the Fossil Falls turn off between Little Lake and Coso Junction. After a short drive on a gravel road you can turn right to go to the falls. If you turn left toward Little Lake Overlook you will drive past the Twin Mountain Rock Venture and then see a parking area on the left. That is where this image was captured. It is a series of lava cones in various shades of brown, covered with some vegetation. I happened to be there the day after a summer monsoon passed through the area, leaving big puffy clouds!

Near Cape Perpetua, Oregon lies one of the most insanely majestic natural wonders in all of America-- a collapsed seacave that has formed a saltwater fountain that's boiling with crashing whitecaps. During high tide, water from the Pacific Ocean rushes into the rocky hole in the coast with a spray of ocean mist. Such a rad natural feature of course has a fittingly awesome name: Thor's Well. I think Odin, [Thor's father,] would approve.

Before all you photographers start packing up your gear and heading out to get your own shot of this phenomenon, be warned: getting close to it is no easy feat, especially since the well looks the coolest when conditions are most dangerous-- high tide and during storms. The hole is decievingly deep, 20 feet or more of jagged rock, and you can never tell when an unexpectedly ginormous wave will come surging past the well, knocking down anyone who might be in the way and dragging them out to sea. Some of the "sea stacks" in Bandon, Oregon. It seemed that around every turn in the road, there is a new sea stack group.

Sea stacks are blocks of erosion-resistant rock isolated from the land by sea. Sea stacks begin as part of a headland or sea cliff. Relentless pounding by waves erodes the softer, weaker parts of a rock first, leaving harder, more resistant rock behind.

It was the Thursday before Good Friday when Mike and I boarded a streetcar in Toronto on our way to meet some friends. As we sat down, a woman dressed in black winter clothing gave us a smile and ask for the time. She seemed happy with the answer and then proceeded to pull a shiny metal cup from her carry bag and continued a search for something else. Finally a bottle of beer with a reclosable cap appeared. She carefully opened the bottle and slowly poured a small amout of liquid into the cup. The refreshment was gingerly consumed, being careful that every drop would escape the cup. The bottle was closed and returned to her bag as we reached our stop. More than likely she would continue to ride the streetcar as long as possible to avoid the freezing rain, snow, and wind, with a temperature of -1C/30F on the street.

In July 2015, Mike and I spent a day at Newport Beach, California. We were there to see out of state friends. We all spent some time on the beach which gave me a chance to take photos to remember the day. Suddenly I saw one of the lifeguards running toward me, carrying all his rescue gear. I quickly snapped a few images and hoped one might be in focus. Fortunately I had been photographing our friends with their grandchildren, so my camera setting were set for action shots!

On a cold morning in January 2016, the skies were cloudless when the sun rose over Death Valley's Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. The center dune was still in shadow while dunes in the foreground and background lit up. Even the mountains beyond the dunes remained in shadow to create a dark backdrop.

This image, titled "Mesquite Wedge", won a 1st place ribbon in tonights Santa Clarita Valley Photographers Association's Winter Digital Photo Contest.

Coro de las Nueve. . . uno, dos, tres . . .

I found this group of birds on Rosarito Beach. A storm was moving in and the birds seemed to be taking a break from their morning food search. Thanks to Mike Mahan-Soto for a title idea!

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is the largest of the many reflecting pools in Washington, D.C., U.S.. It is a long and large rectangular pool located on the National Mall, directly east of the Lincoln Memorial, with the Washington Monument to the east of the reflecting pool. Part of the iconic image of Washington, the reflecting pool hosts many of the 24 million visitors a year who visit the National Mall. It is lined by walking paths and shade trees on both sides. Depending on the viewer's vantage point, it dramatically reflects the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Mall's trees, and/or the expansive sky.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was designed by Henry Bacon, constructed in 1922 and 1923, following the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial.
