West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

I spent the evening giving a workshop to some members of the Easter Maine Camera Club on post processing Nightscape images. We focused on stacking and blending multiple exposures.

West Quoddy Head, in Quoddy Head State Park, Lubec, Maine, is the easternmost point of the contiguous United States. In 1808 a lighthouse was constructed at the site to guide ships through the Quoddy Narrows.

I had the pleasure of working with other members of the Eastern Maine Camera Club after presenting a talk on my journey in Night Photograph earlier this spring.

This ins a multi-shot stack composed of several layers all combined in Photoshop.

Harvest Moon over Mt Katahdin

I’ve been on a bit of a sabbatical from photography over the last year dealing with pandemic social issues and its impact on my family. I felt it was time to get back at it and broke out the equipment to get this shot that has eluded me for years. It can only be taken on one day, the morning of the last full moon in September, The Harvest Moon. After an early morning wakeup (0300) I drove to the small town of Patten, Maine on the 20th. The weather cooperated and I finally got my chance.

This is a stack of 8 images all taken from the same spot. The moon was setting fast at this point and there wasn’t much time to get the sky right. All shot were taken at 500mm with various apertures and shutter speeds. The foreground is a focus stack of 5 shoots, Katahdin and the sky are one shot each, and the moon details added in from a separate shot. All were blended in LR and PS. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did trying to capture it.

Continuing the journey around Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park. This is the footbridge on the North end facing South. Below the Milky Way you can see the lights of the Jordan Pond House on the far shore as well the light pollution from Seal Harbor. Unlike during the panorama of the Pemetic Mountain where it was tranquil here I was inundated with No-see-ums. It was a miserable time getting these shots.
This is a two rows of 3 panels. The bottom 3 panels are three shots focus stacked (3 minute exposures) along with 1 shot for the water (60 second exposure). The top row consists of 3 panels consists of 3 shots (20 second exposures) and stacked to reduce noise.

Equipment used:
Nikon D850
Sigma 14mm Art prime lens
Really Right Stuff Tripod, gimbal and indexing head

Software:
Lightroom for aesthetic adjustments.
Photoshop and PTGui for blending
Helicon Focus 6 for focus stacking
Sequator for star stacking and star alignment

Exposures:
All shots were taken at f1.8, ISO 1600, WB 3700 degrees Kalvin
Foreground 9 shots at 180 sec
Water 3 shots at 60 sec
Stars 9 shots at 20 sec.

I took a late night stroll around Jordan Pond to Tumbledown Cove in Acadia National Park for this panoramic view of the Milky Way arching over Pemetic Mountain and South Bubble. There was a storm cell forming behind me to the West that kept flashing lightning. Luckily the flashes didn’t seem to make it too difficult to process the image.

This is a two row 180 degree panorama. Each row consists of 5 panels. The bottom 5 panels are two shot focus stacked (3 minute exposures) along with 1 shot for the water (60 second exposure). The top row consists of 5 panels. Each panel consists of 3 shots (20 second exposures) and stacked to reduce noise.

Equipment used:
Nikon D850
Sigma 14mm Art prime lens
Really Right Stuff Tripod, gimbal and indexing head
Cabela’s Tri-legged stool for comfort.

Software:
Lightroom for aesthetic adjustments.
Photoshop and PTGui for blending
Helicon Focus 6 for focus stacking
Sequator for star stacking and star alignment

Exposures:
All shots were taken at f1.8, ISO 1600, WB 3700 degrees Kalvin
Foreground 10 shots at 180 sec
Water 5 shots at 60 sec
Stars 15 shots at 20 sec.
