When I took this picture the first week of September, I had grand visions of what waterfowl season would look like with Lady. Four hunts in and she was looking more mature and dialed then ever for her season 2.
Unfortunately, following this hunt, her year was stopped short due to a bad allergic reaction - our collective best guess being grass seeds and bad timing. Through ulcers, hair loss, and multiple rounds of medication, we've watched duck season pass by week after week. While I've still scratched out a few ducks with our one year old, Margo, each sit I found myself missing my girl Lady.
Finally, last week, she looked like a normal lab again. Full head of hair and stir crazy to find some birds. Thanks to some family, we got invited to hunt a club in Iowa over Thanksgiving. We thought long and hard about which dog to run and ultimately gave Lady the start.
While we didn't get a limit, we stacked up 15 greenwings and Lady had a damn near perfect day. It was like she had stockpiled all her best stuff while sitting out. It was such a joy to have her back and to watch guys that had never met her get to enjoy the good life.
Well...despite our best judgement and well wishes, today we go back to the vet with a new flare up.
To say I'm frustrated is an understatement, but at the end of the day, I'm just so grateful for this dog. She gives it her all, loves the game, and has given me way more grace as an owner & trainer than I deserve.
Hopefully, we can get some more answers, stop the reaction early, and find some treatment to prevent it down the road...
But for now...enjoy this picture of our sweet Lady Rose🌹
