Today, I give you a study in emotion and personality in portraiture.

When photographing a person one-on-one, I rarely tell them exactly how to pose. Instead, I offer a simple suggestion:

“How about sitting down in the grass over there?”
“Why don’t you lean against that branch?”

Then I step back and watch.

Almost every time, the pose they naturally choose is better than anything I could have directed. The way a person sits, smiles, holds their hands, tilts their head, or carries themselves is an expression of who they are.

These portraits were taken of two sisters in the exact same location, with the exact same lighting, camera settings, editing style, and loose posing instructions.

Yet they couldn’t feel more different.

For the first portrait, the words that immediately came to mind were:

Grounded.
Confident.
Quiet beauty.

For the second:

Optimistic.
Joyful.
Carefree.

The difference isn’t the photographer, the location, or the edit.

The difference is the person.

This is one of my favorite things about portraiture. Even when every technical element remains the same, no two portraits are ever truly alike, because no two people are.

Beautiful locations and soft light help set the stage, but they’re only supporting details.

The heart of every portrait has always been, and will always be, you.

The Shirley Family has not had family portraits in over 20 years, before their youngest was even born!

When Allison booked her family session, and I read how long it has been in her client questionnaire, I was SO EXCITED that she chose me to be their photographer.

This session was so fun and relaxed, we all walked around together and the bond and love that they all feel for each other was so evident.

It’s so cool to witness how every family session is different.

It FEELS different, looks different, vibes different, and finishes different for every family.

That is because each family IS different and unique.

It’s my job as the artist to capture your family at their core, so that when you look at your final images, it takes you right back to all of the memories of you together.

Like a good book, a good photo should transport you to a different time and place. Most times isn’t even this EXACT time and place. It could be when your daughter was 10 and gave you a quirky smile, it could be remembering how your kids always laughed together as siblings and were always joking.

It’s a gateway to all the moments you want to hold onto.

And it’s so special that I get to be the one to capture it.

I have 3 spots in July left.
June is full.
August is nearing full.

My turnaround time is always extended in the summer months but I promise I am working super hard to get everything delivered as fast as I can! I pour so much time into each edit to make them look the way they do, but I believe the wait is worth it!

I am still working on end of April and all of May larger scale sessions (30 images or more)

Call me if you are interested in a July or August session! Book now and thank yourself later! 😊

Last Saturday my family and I visited my parents in Newcastle. We were blessed to witness the most incredible lightning storm I think I have ever seen!

The lightning lasted for over an hour straight, maybe even two hours.

Luckily, my camera was packed in my car and I was able to really experiment and dial in my settings and get some amazing shots. I felt like a kid in a candy store.

These images are lightly edited, brightness was brought up a bit, a little contrast was added, but the colors in each of these images is unique to the lightning bolt that is captured.

It was pitch black outside (11:00pm) and I had to learn to gauge my settings to be in line with the lighting of the sky mid strike.

A very fun challenge.

While it is incredible to see so many different lightning strikes frozen in different points of formation, what is most fascinating to me is the way the color and light is affected so differently in each. Notice the poplar tree, how each image the tree is lit differently depending on where the light is coming from in the sky, is it behind the tree, in front of it illuminating it, behind the clouds, to the side? Each image looks different based on where the light is coming from. Absolutely fascinating.

Without further ado, here is the lightning storm June 6, 2026, Newcastle, Wyoming.

Featuring the house I grew up in, built in the 1940s, and the poplar tree my dad planted when I was a baby.

Sometimes God sends me people as a reminder and rekindling of my purpose and my why.

They are always unexpected and deeply needed—showing up at exactly the right time.

These specific people and sessions always stay strongly in my heart, even years later.

Sarah came to the studio with her sweet husband—full of excitement.

They are expecting a beautiful baby boy.

She shared she has been dreaming of this maternity session for years, and after experiencing loss, she finally was able to book a session and get the maternity portraits she has been dreaming of…for what felt like forever.

For me, hearing this was humbling.

It reawakened the meaning and purpose of what I do.

It was a reminder that my job is about more than just taking photos. It’s the experience in the session, of being vulnerable—but excited to share your story.

It is molding visual art into an expression of the feelings and spirit beneath the surface.

My joy in watching Sarah glow, smile, and beam with confidence, while her adoring husband encouraged her, showering her with love—was overwhelming.

I watched her navigate a slight fear of doing something new, to then embracing FULLY what this session truly means.

She is having her baby.
This is real.
Hope abounds.

It was astonishingly beautiful.

And that experience is my why.

The sessions can change—but the root is the same.

I don’t HAVE to do this job.
I’m not stuck here and grumbling.
I’m not doing this because it’s a good paycheck or it’s the only job I could find.

I WANT to. I am honored to.

Sarah didn’t HAVE to choose me.
There are MANY great photographers right here in Gillette.

But she trusted me, invested in me, and was hopeful.

I do not take that choice lightly.

I don’t HAVE to do my job, I GET to do my job.

To capture human connection, their life experiences, and turning it into art.

There’s no other job I would rather do.

Thank you, Sarah, for trusting me. For being vulnerable and brave, even after heartbreaking loss.

For visually expressing hope, anticipation, joy, perseverance, bravery, unconditional love, and new beginnings.

Thank you for the reminder of why I do what I do.
