THEY'RE BACK!
THEY'RE BACK!
Yesterday was definitely a "B" Celebration Day with Bobolinks, Shimmery Blue Tree swallows and New Babies.
On our evening walk, the highlight was the sighting of Bobolinks who have returned from their long migration to South America.
We spotted them in a field that fortunately had not yet been mowed. Bobolinks are ground nesters and their populations have been decimated by loss of habitat. The "No Mow May" initiative is to help protect these and other ground nesting species.
The Tree Swallows, with their shimmery, blue feathers also came for the first time yesterday. They are also long distant migrators and we usually see them much earlier in the month.
The incessant chattering of baby birds and warning calls from a Hairy woodpecker, led to the discovery of its nest high up on a tree.
I do love this time of year!!!

We have been following a heron rookery for weeks now. Returning after an absence of several weeks, we were delighted to see young chicks/fledglings in four of the nests.
What surprised us was in the midst of 7 nests (five were occupied), there was a red-tailed hawks nest close by with two babies in it. We went back twice today.
During the early visit, the parent hawk was in the nest, and then was dive bombed by Kingbirds and some grackles and had periods where she/he called out continually. At first we thought the nest was another heron nest and that the hawk was attacking the baby. But later, when the two little fuzzy heads popped up, you could tell immediately they weren't herons!

I love starting my day by sitting quietly, listening to and observing the birds who serenade us so beautifully this time of year. This male cardinal's songs this morning were echoed by its partner in a nearby tree. While their songs might vary, both the males and females sing. It was a great way to start the day.

I love hearing and seeing the returning little warblers: they tend to flip from branch to branch and can be a challenge to photograph. It’s a bit more successful when the leaves aren’t fully in. The names are under each picture.

"Wander often, wonder always, especially among the whispering trees"...
I'm not sure who said this beautiful quote, but wandering through the woods on this misty, cool Sunday morning, was a gift of time and wonder.

They're back!
A sign that winter is around the corner is the arrival of the dark-eyed juncos, who summer in the north in Canada and Alaska and go south (to us and farther) in the winter.
We have them all summer long at our camp on the border of Maine and Canada, but haven't seen them for a few weeks up there.
Upon arriving home, we were delighted to see them here.

Our cars are loaded, the cabin has been winterized, our studio is empty and it is time to head home to NH…..only a six hour drive, which is long but the destination is always worth it.
Bye Maine…..for now.

Another favorite photo from my Wednesday watercolor painting day on the deck.
I love how the contrast of the richness of the Autumn foliage showcases the beauty of the little Chickadee.

This little male Eastern Bluebird lost some of his brilliantly blue"courting colors', but still is a handsome fellow.
