Some of the most rewarding spaces to photograph are the ones where architecture, materials, lighting, and craftsmanship all come together.

These are a few of my favorite custom bathrooms from recent Arizona projects. Each one has a different combination of stone, tile, millwork, plumbing fixtures, natural light, and architectural detail, but they all share something I look for when photographing custom homes: the details deserve to be seen.

For custom home builders, architects, and interior designers, photography is an important part of documenting the finished work and communicating the quality behind the design.

The same attention to composition and light carries into luxury real estate, vacation rental, and hospitality photography, where thoughtful spaces need to translate just as well on screen as they do in person.

The target guest should influence how a vacation rental is photographed.

I recently photographed a home in the Troon area of North Scottsdale for an Airbnb management company working to attract more medium-term guests.

Because of HOA requirements in the neighborhood, the property’s marketing strategy placed greater emphasis on longer stays. That meant the photography needed to show more than a collection of attractive rooms.

I focused on the features that help someone imagine living in the home for weeks or months: four bedrooms, a large kitchen, laundry, generous living space, and a private landscaped yard.

Every property has a different story to tell. Understanding the client’s marketing strategy before the shoot helps determine which parts of that story deserve the most visual attention.

Q: How often should Airbnb photos be updated?

A: Vacation rental photography should be refreshed whenever the property changes in a meaningful way or when the existing images no longer represent the guest experience.

Why this matters

New furnishings, renovations, updated landscaping, added amenities, and seasonal improvements all influence how guests perceive a property. Outdated photographs can create inaccurate expectations.

How I approach it

Rather than replacing every image, I often recommend photographing the improvements that have the greatest impact on bookings while maintaining a consistent look throughout the gallery.

A North Scottsdale Airbnb owner recently contacted me to refresh their photos for 2 reasons: 1. New, fresh furnishings that changed the whole "feel" of the listing. and 2. A re-strategization of their marketing to reflect a more "family-friendly" space to attract more long-term guests at higher rates.

Properties in Arizona frequently invest in outdoor living improvements such as shade structures, landscaping, putting greens, pickleball courts, and resort-style pools. Those additions deserve updated photography.

Q:Why does twilight photography help vacation rentals?

A: Twilight photography showcases a vacation rental during one of the most inviting times of day, highlighting outdoor living spaces and creating an emotional connection with potential guests.

Why this matters

Evening is when many travelers imagine relaxing by the pool, enjoying dinner on the patio, or gathering around outdoor seating. Twilight imagery captures that atmosphere in a way daytime photography cannot.

How I approach it

Twilight sessions are carefully timed so the interior lighting, landscape lighting, pool lighting, and evening sky all work together. The best images often happen during a brief window when everything is balanced naturally.

At a home I photographed in Chandler for VRBO, the owner described the beautiful sunsets she enjoys while sitting in her backyard and really wanted to capture that moment. In doing so, I suggested a twilight photoshoot separate from the interiors so that we could show two different moments in time. The sky showed off that night while the pool and outdoor lighting provided the ambiance to create the perfect scene for photos.

Arizona's outdoor lifestyle makes twilight photography especially effective for luxury vacation rentals featuring pools, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and mountain views.

What if your vacation rental could show guests what it feels like to actually use the space?

Beautiful vacation rental photography shows the property.

Lifestyle photography helps people imagine themselves in it.

For some properties, an empty patio, pool, game room or outdoor amenity doesn’t tell the whole story. A thoughtfully composed lifestyle image can give prospective guests a better sense of how the space is meant to be experienced.

I’ve been experimenting with adding realistic lifestyle elements to my existing vacation rental photographs, including people interacting naturally with the amenities and environment.

The important part is that the property itself remains the photograph. The people are added to the original image rather than replacing or re-creating the scene, preserving the detail, architecture and styling of the actual property.

It’s another tool for solving a problem I see often in vacation rental photography:

How do you make a guest imagine themselves here?

This won’t be appropriate for every image or every property. But when used selectively, it can turn a beautiful photograph into one that tells a little more of the story.
