Imagine for a moment you are engaged in what has become an enduring hobby associated with, say, scotch tape. Enthused you may be, but you find it unsettling at times to share your passion with your Facebook friends.

Once you get past double-sided and magic disappearing and gift-wrap varieties, the Likes begin trending downward.

Then, the impossible happens. Talented, hard-working people see an opportunity: why not a conference for scotch tape aficionados? If we can get 100 attendees it could pencil out!

You see the announcement... plunk down the deposit, then the final payment, and you go.

Five days of total sublime immersion in all things scotch tape. You make new friends, absorb new ideas, gain new enthusiasm. Most of all you revel in the feeling that you can blurt out assertions about stickiness quotients or optimal spool lengths and no one looks at you like you're crazy. Or even out of line.

That was my experience last week at... Out of Merritt Island. I was surrounded by bird photographers.

These were my people. I am so glad I found them before I croak.
