"Island Time"

I went to Oahu, Hawaii to visit some friends and explore the island. It was my first full day, and I had just done a hike that took me straight up what seemed like a sheer cliff. My legs were tired, my knees wobbly, and I was dehydrated. But I saw a sign on the side of the road for a lighthouse, so I pulled over to check it out. Discovered that it was more than a mile to the light house, up a ridge, but I went for it anyways. Hiked to the top, legs angry with me, and found no light house. Turns out it's way down the side of the cliff, on a trail closed to the public. But I did find some amazing views as the sun was beginning to set.

"Untitled"

This little barrel cactus was hanging out near the edge of a cliff on Deer Lake Mesa at Philmont Scout Ranch. I had wandered off to find a good spot to introduce my crew to the wilderness pledge we did with every group, and I came across this outlook which encompassed most of the surrounding peaks and was truly awe-inspiring. Perfect place! As I started to walk back, I noticed this plant and thought it looked absolutely perfect. I took out my camera, lay on my belly, and took the photo.

"Butterfly Hero"

Have you ever been slogging up the steep backside of a mountain with forty pounds on your back, sweat running down your face, and a level of exhaustion that exceeds the uncomfortable? That's where I was in New Mexico, hiking up Urraca Mesa at Philmont Scout Ranch with a crew that I was Rangering for. My legs ached, my back ached, and the kids I was with were bring super annoying! Mentally, I didn't want to deal with that hike anymore. Then, this little red savior came out of the bushes and landed right in front of me. Just the one little smidge of nature was enough to lift my mood and get my head back in the game. Thanks, butterfly!

"Portrait of Barack Obama"

I'm sitting on the highest point on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, having just climbed to the top of this wicked awesome lookout tower with some friends. They knew the islands far better than me and were pointing things out, telling me what they all were. 'In this direction,' they said, 'is Bitter End, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. And to the left, that's Richard Branson's private island.' Well this was just a couple of days after 45 had moved in, and unbeknownst to me at the time, 44 was taking a well earned vacation with his good buddy, Richard. It's the closest I've ever gotten to taking a photo of Obama, despite being from DC. More importantly, though, my friends weren't wrong - this is one of the most beautiful places on Earth!
