Sometimes the photograph you come home with isn't the photograph you went looking for.
I arrived at Audi Field excited and grateful for the opportunity to photograph the Howard University vs. Hampton University football game. Receiving media access was a win, and after the drive to Washington, D.C., I was ready to create.
Once inside, I discovered my credential gave me access to a designated photography area with more limited sightlines than I had anticipated. Between the venue restrictions and obstructions from the assigned location, creating the football action images I had envisioned proved difficult.
I'll admit—I was frustrated.
But not every assignment goes according to plan, and sometimes the lesson is learning to adapt when it doesn't.
Before kickoff, I went into the stands and created this panoramic view of Audi Field. Looking at it afterward reminded me of something I've been trying to practice lately:
Find the win.
I earned the opportunity to be there. I experienced another professional sports environment. I met with other photographers and talked about photography. I learned more about preparing for future assignments. And I came home with an image I'm proud of.
Not the photograph I went looking for—but a photograph I'm glad I made.
On to the next assignment.
