Memory Monday (by Joe Reinbolt πππβοΈπ¬πΏ)
Old-timers in Carson City will remember this old building behind Bargain Market on Long St as the old Cinema 50 movie theatre! It has been empty for years and is now covered with beautiful murals!
Cinema 50 (also known in later listings and directories as New Cinema 50 or operated under Wallace Theaters) is a fond piece of Carson Cityβs movie-going past.
Location & Setting
Where It Was: Cinema 50 was located along Highway 50 East (East William Street), roughly around 2226 Highway 50 East in the retail corridor east of downtown.
Neighborhood Landmarks: Locals remember it sitting right by the old Warehouse Market / Scolariβs plaza (the shopping area where Grocery Outlet is today).
Era & Significance in Town
Rise of the Multiplexes (1970sβ1980s): During the 1970s and 1980s, Carson City's movie scene transitioned away from the historic single-screen houses downtown (such as the old Carson Theatre) and outdoor drive-ins toward suburban strip-center theaters.
The "Big Three" Era: For a good stretch in the late 1970s and through the 1980s, Carson City was served primarily by three theaters:
Cinema 50 out on Highway 50 East.
Frontier Cinemas / Carson Twin at Frontier Plaza on Winnie Lane.
Northgate Movies 4 (later expanded to 10) in Northgate Plaza off North Carson Street.
Theatrical Runs: During its prime, Cinema 50 served as a primary first-run house for major blockbustersβmany long-time residents remember lining up outside around the building for premieres like The Empire Strikes Back in 1980.
The Twilight Years & Closure
Increased Competition: When larger modern multiplexes began dominatingβspecifically the Northgate 4 expanding into Northgate 10 in the late 1990sβsmaller operations struggled to compete for first-run film distribution prints.
Second-Run Transition & Demise: In its twilight years toward the late 1990s, Cinema 50 transitioned toward discount second-run showings and budget ticketing before closing its doors permanently.
Aftermath: Following its closure, the building sat vacant for several years before the retail parcel was gradually renovated and repurposed into medical, dental, and local commercial office spaces.
