It's been a great to start to spring migration this year...can't help wonder what might be the next great bird to see in Northern Illinois. Yesterday a Ruff was found in Kane County, a bird I needed for my home county list. We got up early and headed out before the sun to hopefully get a look at this beauty. As you can see my his range map, he's a little off the trail between African and Russia. So glad he came to visit us.

Today we visited Delnor Woods in St. Charles for the first time. We observed 32 species of birds, enjoyed spring blossoms, and found the Kathy Andrini memorial area.

There's been a rare sighting of a Burrowing Owl in Chicago this month. This is the 8th sighting of this species in Illinois during the past 96 years! On Saturday, we drove into Chicago's Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary to have a look at this little 8 inch owl, whose range is normally in the western states and Florida. This was a milestone bird for me, as it is my 350th bird species seen in Illinois. Views were distant (about 100 yards away)and best seen with a scope. My photo was good for documentation.

Spring is in the air and this Brown Creeper was in heaven at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary this weekend. Hunting beetles from small holes along the trunk of the tree, kept him relatively low for great photo ops!

Took a trip up north to Milwaukee after work today. Following reports of a "Mega Rare" Kelp Gull from South America that has mated with a Herring Gull atop a roof on the docks. We arrived at about 3:30, got out of the car viewed the birds with binocs and acquired several photos. Within 10 minutes the bird flew off the nest, revealing looks at the hybrid Kelp/Herring Chick. Glad I was able to leave work just a little early, or we would've missed this LIFER! The Kelp Gull has the dark black back & wings in the first pic, the hybrid chick is near the nest in second pic (click on image to see full view).

Louisiana Waterthrush are a tough warbler species to hear or see in Kane County. There seem to be at least two singing along the creek at Leroy Oakes in St. Charles this weekend. This one stopped for a bit of breakfast this morning.

Spring migration is on....today Chris and I spent eight hours in eight Geneva & Batavia, IL parks and saw 81 species of birds. The bird of the day was this Common Night Hawk, found by birders, while it was roosting at Fabyan Forest Preserve.
