The beautiful Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse stands tall along the banks of the mighty Lake Superior in Munising Michigan, first lit in 1868 to guide boats through the channel of Grand island into Munising Harbor the lighthouse unfortunately was very difficult to see from the rough water and was decommissioned only 40 years after its first light. The lighthouse was nearly lost to erosion and the brutal elements of the Great Lakes until 85 ambitious locals with a fondness for the old lighthouse formed The Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse Rescue committee, not only successfully restoring the lighthouse but also building a sea wall to stop the ever relentless lake from encroaching on the foundation. This little piece of history is not accessible by land, but if you are lucky and the weather permits the view from the lake is absolutely spectacular.
