At a young age, my love of birds got me some strange gifts. One of which I still have. It’s a taxidermied Belted Kingfisher. As I’ve rediscovered my love of birds, the Kingfisher continued to stand out to me, and not just because it’s in my living room. My favorite bird.

Watch a video of them in action. Amazing stuff. They truly are the kings out there.

Over the last two weeks or so, I’ve caught glimpses of Kingfishers, but not enough to get clear pictures. Thus, they’ve stayed off my life list. A bummer, but them’s the rules I set for myself when I started compiling my list.

Today, my girlfriend and I went to a roadside spot and took in the sights. Lots of heard, but not seen warblers, a Northern Flicker, and the ever-present Red-winged Blackbird.

Just seconds after she had said “I hope we can see the Kingfisher”, I heard the rattling call that had been haunting me. I looked up, and saw her. A female Belted Kingfisher flying our way into a nearby tree.

Luckily, she stayed and posed for me long enough to get some great shots. Getting to see that made my day. Now, I have to get pictures of the Kingfisher in action, diving into the water.

There’s some other pictures from over the last few days. From Maplewood High School, the south beaches at Mosquito Lake, and the Grand River Wildlife Observation Trail in Bristolville.
