Photographer confession: I take A LOT of photos with my phone.

Like… an unbelievable number.

But pretty often, I look back through them and find one (or 10!) that I absolutely love.

These are some favorites that haven't made it here.

I wasn’t working. I wasn’t thinking about composition or settings or anything else photographer-y. I just happened to look up and think, yep, I need to keep this moment forever.

No fancy camera. No planning. No posing. Just a really good moment that happened to have beautiful light and the right subjects.

And honestly, I love that.

Not every photograph has to be planned. Sometimes you just notice something beautiful and hit the button.

Apparently, 17 years of being a photographer has made me incapable of leaving a lovely moment alone. 😂🫎

I've realized lately that my favorite photographs usually happen a few seconds after I give direction.

I'll ask a couple to walk together, or pause for a moment, and then...something shifts.

They stop thinking about where to stand.
They start noticing each other.

That's the part I love.

These photographs are gently guided, but they leave room for movement, light, and all the little in-between moments that make a photograph feel honest.

Some family trips carry a little more meaning than others.

Sometimes we travel to celebrate. Sometimes we travel to remember. Sometimes we do both at the same time.

This Yellowstone adventure was a chance for a family to come together, explore a place that held special meaning, and create new memories while honoring the ones who brought them here.

There were moments of reflection, moments of remembering, and plenty of laughter—the kind that reminds us that joy and grief can exist together.

These are the sessions that remind me why photographs matter. Not just because of what they show, but because of the people, stories, and love held within them.

Extended family sessions are some of my favorites. The generations, the relationships, the inside jokes, the big laughs, the little moments—you never know which images will become the ones your family treasures most.

Thank you for letting me be a small part of your Yellowstone adventure. 🫎

One of my favorite things about photographing families in Yellowstone is getting to see the park through a child's eyes.

While we're busy admiring the steaming pools and incredible landscapes, kids are noticing the boardwalk beneath their feet, the patterns in the rocks, and wondering what's just beyond the fence.

They're curious. They're moving. They're experiencing Yellowstone exactly the way they're meant to.

I think there's something we can learn from that.

The best family sessions aren't about getting everyone to look at the camera. They're about making room for curiosity, exploration, and all the little moments that happen along the way.

Not perfectly posed, but genuinely experienced. 🫎

Kids are pretty good at reminding us what vacation is supposed to look like.

A pocket full of rocks.
A stick that suddenly becomes the greatest treasure on Earth.
Running just because there's room to run.

You don't have to spend your whole session looking at the camera. In fact, I hope you don't.

FAQ: "What if my kids just want to explore?"

Perfect. That's exactly what we're going to let them do.

I'll guide your family when I need to, but the best images, hands down, are when the kids are busy being kids and everyone else joins in.

I think family sessions should feel a little like an adventure.

A walk down the trail, a few piggyback rides, some exploring, and maybe a game or two along the way.

No pressure. No perfect behavior required. No expectation that little ones will stand still and smile on command.

Just your family spending time together while I tag along with a camera, documenting the laughter, the chaos, and all those little moments in between. With a few cheesy smiles, also. For grandma.

But I think the best photos usually happen when everyone forgets they're having their pictures taken 🫎

FAQ: When is the best time to schedule maternity photos?
I usually recommend sometime between 28–34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully visible but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience.

Apparently four-year-olds only come with two speeds: asleep and absolutely flying. Around here, childhood looks a lot like moving bike tires, wild hair, scraped knees, and racing toward whatever adventure is waiting next.

FAQ: Do you photograph your own kids the same way you photograph client sessions?
Absolutely! Some of my favorite images are the in-between, everyday moments — the ones that feel ordinary now but become priceless later.

Yellowstone likes to keep us on our toes — and this session was proof of that! We had June snow, a little rain, and the kind of weather that makes most people think a session is ruined… but honestly? It turned into some of the dreamiest, most memorable portraits.

FAQ: What happens if the weather turns during our session?
Montana weather changes fast, and after photographing in Yellowstone for years, I know how to pivot! Sometimes we adjust timing, sometimes we tuck into a different location, and sometimes we lean into it — because a little wild weather can create seriously beautiful magic.
