I still get excited every time I see a Sandhill Crane. Makes me reminisce the times I would walk through Payne’s prairie surrounded by hundreds of them. Love these tall long legged beauties.

The average human has 20/20 vision. Comparatively an eagle has 20/5. This means an eagle is able to see things from 20 feet away that the average human can see from only 5 feet. On that note I just got back from the Ophthalmologist and it turns out I have 20/15 vision in both eyes. So, though my dream to be able to fly like a Eagle is likely never to come true. At least I can see things a little bit more like an eagle than most humans. I’ll call that a win.

Scarface. King of the Mara.
Its was my first evening within the Maasai Mara National Reserve. We only had about two hours before we had to be out of the park for closing. We hear a call over the CB radio. “Lions!”. Without time to spare we quickly sped over to where the sighting was reported. As we approach I see there are four other vehicles parked. We pull around the first car and there he was. My first sighting of a lion in its natural habitat! A big beautiful male with a full dark mane. A guide from the camp I’m staying at is there in one of the other vehicles we parked beside. “Scarface” she whispers to me. “one of the most famous lions alive.” The only Scarface I knew of was from the movie Lion King, but I kept that thought to myself. We spent the next hour just watching him and the two lionesses that accompanied him as the sun sank closer to the horizon behind us. When we were back at camp I researched about Scarface the lion and found what the guide said to be true. He is famous. So famous that many people have the sighting of this lion on their bucket lists. There is even a page dedicated to him. After learning this I felt even more lucky and humbled to have been graced by his presence. That the famous Scarface was the first wild lion I encountered. It’s a memory that I cherish and visit often. Though as I revisit this memory at this moment, it’s a bit more dim learning of his passing in this last week. A lions lifespan in the wild is around 10-15 yrs. and Scarface to my understanding died at the age of 14. I am happy about the full life he lived and how his fame brought much awareness and appreciation to the Mara Reserve.
R.I.P Scarface. King of the Mara.

Fantastic news for Florida and it’s wildlife!

Today, the Florida legislature passed the Florida Wildlife Corridor Act, with bipartisan unanimous support. The purpose of the act, and of the Corridor itself, is “to create incentives for conservation and sustainable development while sustaining and conserving the green infrastructure that is the...

It’s been way too long since I’ve seen these beauties on the prairie. Can’t tell how happy I was to share their trial with them again. Cheers to more visits with bison friends.

The greater one-horned rhino is a conservation success, with numbers increasing significantly since 1975. Back then there were only 600 rhinos left in the wild.

After decades of successful efforts, the species increased to 3,500 in India and Nepal by mid-2015. The one-horned rhino is now the most numerous of the three Asian rhino species.

Even so, the species faces the ever-present threat of poaching for its horn and continuing habitat loss. -WWF

Sharkweek. Learn from the facts not the hype. We need sharks. We depend on them to keep our oceans clean of diseased fish and by doing so they keep the reefs healthy. Sharks = healthy reefs = healthy oceans = healthy humans. Do yourself a favor and help sharks to help yourself. Sharks are important! They’re not food and not man-eaters.

I watched this hawk hunt for over a half hour while using the broadleaf cattail as a hide. It was originally trying to get a small rodent of some kind but was unsuccessful. So it just grabbed a grasshopper instead. That’ll do hawk, that’ll do.

Male lions spend 18-20 hours of their day resting and sleeping. They don’t need to do the hunting. That is left up to the lionesses of the pride. The biggest thing a male lion worries about is another male lion intruding on their territory. After a work day like today, I'm just wishing I could be on a male lions level of rest.

Finally at my second home. The Florida keys are being pounded with bad weather but it’s still so nice to be back down here after years of missing the islands. Hoping weather will pull through and give us at least one day to explore the reefs.
