As she carries a piece of hope back to her nest, it occurred to me that animals are eternal optimists. They work so hard for their nests. They struggle and fight and it's always because, surely, they believe things will get better. The possible outcome is worth the very real risk. Tomorrow will be better than today. Animals deserve all of the tomorrows that they, without realizing it themselves, believe in. I hope her babies will be healthy and safe. She carries some of my hope, too.

Birds are a way for the universe to know what it is like to fly. 150 million years and counting, the universe seems to have a love for it. I think that is amazing.

It's a sad and sobering reality that the most dangerous thing in the universe to other living things is us. Life on this world survived the unimaginable before we arrived. A rock the size of Mt Everest weighing 1 trillion tons and travelling 20 times the speed of a rifle bullet tore through our atmosphere and impacted the Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago, releasing over 100 MILLION megatons of energy. The debris ejected into orbit that rained back down as well as direct energy from the impact fireball resulted in the near immediate ignition of massive forest fires. Evidence shows that the entire North American continent was engulfed in fire in minutes, at most, after the impact. I think of the suffering that happened on that day, enshrined forever in the fossil record.

We live in a world of illusions where the reality of life in the cosmos is ignored or explained away with placating fables and excuses. Physics cannot be bargained with. The dangers we all face on a tiny blue world with an impossibly thin veil of air protecting us from the void are routinely dismissed. Expert testimony from the most prestigious institutions in the world paint a terrifying picture of the next century if we embrace business as usual. And we are becoming more attached to those illusions as the US government has taken extensive steps to put its head in the sand and ignore whatever isn't convenient. We are pulling up ocean temp monitoring equipment. We fired scientists whose job it is to understand this world.

We are more dangerous to life on this world than the most violent event in its history. By 2100, about 1/3 of the species on this world will face extinction if we do not act NOW. Our entire lives are encapsulated by a global crisis, happening in real time.

I noticed this unusual activity and I think he was looking for turtle eggs but he didn't find any as far as I could tell. Most likely this nest was already completely raided or he was looking for a possible nest. Crows are intelligent and can solve simple puzzles. They will choose the actions that make their lives easier. One of the consequences of the bear hunt and the general disappearance of larger predators is that the smaller predators end up being more destructive to turtle populations because there are more of them around now. Raccoons in particular are adapting to life near humans as their habitat gets destroyed and fragmented. For all of the people that were cheering on the black bear hunt, I never heard this problem talked about because it was never about conservation but ego. Then the hunters want to say they have the right to do this since they are the biggest conservationists. So David Attenborough doesn't count? Nor Greta Thunberg? A mother Snapping Turtle might have to spend 30 years dodging cars and boat propellers and figuring out where to hide her nest so the crows don't get it before she can successfully bring new life into the world that results in more mature adult turtles. There is an order and a balance to nature that few grasp in any way that approaches its entirety. David Attenborough is one. Carl Sagan was another. The thoughts and questions of these types of people should guide policy and not by people who speak and think in ways that are indistinguishable from the comments section of an unmoderated word of mouth group.

In the stillness of a north Florida morning, a determined Earthling crosses an expanse of water as she heads back to her nest with some building materials. In a world absent of propaganda, religion, ideologies and prejudices, she focuses on the immediate task at hand. She follows the loose instructions given just to her, an ancient voice from the void. It speaks to her as she navigates a world that dwarfs any imagination she may have. These are her instincts and they continually guide her as she works towards completing the most important task of her life, raising and defending her babies. This may be the first year she brings new life into the world. It may be her last time. Her life may be taken from her as she focuses on nurturing and protecting her offspring. So many stories that go untold because nature loves to keep her secrets. Bring kindness with you always when you walk the sacred lands of our world. We are surrounded by small creatures fighting for survival in an infinite vastness, and the combination of their innocence, bravery, and strength inspires me every time I am a witness to it.
