3/2026 - 2nd stop on our last day in Death Valley was the amazing Badwater Basin. It is the lowest point in North America at 282 ft below sea level. The salt flats here cover nearly 200 square miles, and are composed mostly of sodium chloride (table salt), along with calcite, gypsum, and borax. Badwater Basin was once the site of the large ancient inland Lake Manly which evaporated tens of thousands of years ago. The lake had no outlet, leading to the accumulation of sediment and salt over time. When the lake eventually evaporated, concentrated salt deposits were left behind. Not only did we strike it rich with seeing the rare super bloom of flowers in the park, but it is also very rare for there to be water in the basin, and its colors were amazing!

Death Valley National Park (3/26): Hiking the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Although the highest dune rises only about 100 feet, the dunes actually cover a vast area. This dune field includes three types of dunes: crescent, linear, and star shaped. Polygon-cracked clay of an ancient lakebed forms the floor. Mesquite trees have created large hummocks that provide stable habitats for wildlife. The natural patterns in the dunes are a photographer's delight!

Next stop in Death Valley National Park - Ubehebe (pronounced you-bee-hee-bee) Crater. Approximately 2,000 years ago the crater was created by rising magma that came into contact with groundwater, resulting in a steam and gas explosion that left the 600' deep, half a mile wide crater. Cinders from the explosion cover most of the surrounding area and are as deep as 150' along the crater rim. If you ever visit Death Valley NP, the drive out to the crater is worth it!
