HOW TO GET YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE!

We know, not the most exciting topic, BUT something that a lot of eloping couples get confused about.

So, let us try and shed some light...

🏛️ Typically you need to acquire your marriage license IN the state you are planning to get married in. Eg. You wanna elope in Colorado? Then you need to get a Colorado marriage license. You CANNOT get one in your home state and bring it with you, it will be invalid. There IS the odd exception to this: Texas, for example, allows you to use its license out of state but this is very rare.

🏛️ Which COUNTY you get it in is not important: a marriage license for one county is valid across the entire state. So, based on your travel plans you might have a few options on where to pick it up.

🏛️ You can expect to pay a small fee, usually in the $30-50 range.

🏛️ Marriage licenses are valid for a certain number of days and this varies from state to state. Make sure it’s not going to expire if you apply too soon!

🏛️ On the flip side, some actually have a waiting period! Ie. It’s not valid the moment you get it, you might have to get it then wait a few days before you can get married.

🏛️ You will get your marriage license at the county clerk’s office: you might need an appointment, or they might do walk-ins.

🏛️ Some states require an officiant and two witnesses, some just one witness, some no one at all!

🏛️ Colorado is one of the easiest states since you can ‘self-solemnize’ (don’t need officiant or witnesses) AND the license is valid immediately. Even better, in many counties your dog can ‘sign’ your license!

🏛️ Utah is also super easy as the whole thing can be done DIGITALLY, you don’t need to go in person: meaning you can apply before you even leave your own home and don’t need to factor it into travel plans.

🏛️ Once you have held your ceremony, you can return your completed marriage LICENSE either in person or via mail. Your final marriage CERTIFICATE will then be issued to you and the whole thing is official!

Time for a little introduction...

We are Chad and Vanessa, ‘The Outlovers’: a planning, photography and ceremony officiation team working across Colorado and Utah.

As elopement photographers, we’re here for the couples who find their deepest connection in the great outdoors: the couples who aren’t just in it for the pretty photos, and who sure ain’t in it for likes on social media, but rather those who truly find peace and meaning out in nature. There’s simply no other place they could imagine being on their wedding day.

Whether you wanna hike a little, go off-roading or simply throw out a blanket and enjoy a picnic with a view, we’re IN! There’s no correct ‘adventure level’ to elope with us, we’ve worked with couples from both ends of the spectrum and we love it all. Do what feels most like ‘you’, whatever that may look like!

We work with a lot of ‘older’ couples (it’s all relative, of course, but the average couple in the US gets married in their 20s) and we really enjoy that! We’re in our early 40s ourselves, we have lived a lot of lives prior to this one and we really enjoy hearing your stories, too.

Most importantly, we don’t care who you love, where you come from or what you look like... We support you. And we can’t wait to celebrate you!

If you’d like to know more about working with us, drop us a message and let us know in the comments. We’re still booking for 2026 and would love to hear about your plans.

This might sound harsh AF, but…

No one else has the RIGHT to be at your wedding!

Your wedding day is sacred.

And you MUST draw boundaries around it that serve YOU.

🖤 If that means telling people you’re choosing to keep it private, or only inviting very few people, then so be it.

🖤 If that means them getting upset and making it all about them, then so be it.

🖤 If that means accusations of selfishness coming your way, then so be it.

🖤 If that means people’s true natures being revealed, then so be it.

🖤 If that means you having to push through some uncomfortable situations, then so be it.

None of this is easy, we know. But staying true to yourselves and remaining loyal to your honest desires for your wedding day is ESSENTIAL.

We pretty much guarantee everyone that matters will eventually get over their issues.

We don’t, however, guarantee you’d ever get over the resentment of being forced into a wedding day you don’t actually want!

Give us a 👏 in the comments if you agree!
