This past weekend, I won second place in Photography category at the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco show Fresh Start, juried by Bonny Leibowitz, for this photo of New York City's famous Grand Central Station. Yay!

The photo was taken on a rainy evening last November when my wife and I went exploring around Manhattan. I did a quick test with my digital camera to be sure that the look of the photo would be what I had in mind. I didn't have a tripod with me so I set my medium format film camera Mamiya 7 on the railing to keep it steady and fired off a shot that I knew would have a lot of blurry subjects running around.

The print will be on display as a part of the Fresh Start show until April 6.

My favorite fact about the New York City harbor is that East River isn't a river at all.

This was the second time I visited NYC during Thanksgiving, and what caught me by surprise both times is how early the sun sets. For our sunset cruise, the boarding started at 2:30 PM!

We were on our way back during golden hour, hanging out next to Lady Liberty, with a fantastic view of Lower Manhattan bathed in warm light. I took a few photos with my Mamiya 7 film camera, of which I like this one the best, where I deliberately waited for one of the birds following the boat to fly into the frame. The film was Fuji Pro 400h.

It's almost time for another trip to New York City! Just as in 2010, when this photo was taken, I'll be going there for most of the Thanksgiving week. Among many other things, we'll be cheering on the marching band from Texas Tech University, as they are included in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Parade to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the university.

Together with Rome, New York is one of my favorite cities in the world, due in no small part to the fact that it's utterly photogenic. I'm sure I'll come back with some more great photos.

This print, titled "Overlooking the River" is one of two of my artworks accepted into the "Creme de la Creme" show by Visual Arts Guild of Frisco. This Sunday night at the Frisco Discovery Center is the reception for the show, and I'd love for you to come out and celebrate local art and artists. There will be food and drinks, as well as live music courtesy of the Melody of Hope artist Courtney Istre. Art will be on display until December 10 and most of it is for sale; a portion of the sales will be donated to Frisco Fastpacs. Jurors Nancy Cohen Israel and Heather Canterbury will announce the winners, and the prize pool is $3,000.

I took the photo at Yellowstone National Park earlier this year from one of the spots overlooking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. I loved how this tree was sticking up from among the rocks and I framed it with the river in the background. Come see it in person!

Kiyomizu-dera temple, Kyoto, Japan, April 2023

After two weeks in Japan, I couldn't help but fall in love with Kyoto and its mix of quaint neighborhoods and centuries-old temples, parks and palaces. It is utterly beautiful and I recommend you visit if an opportunity presents itself.

Kiyomizu-dera is a famous temple built at the foot of a mountain, which you can climb (if you feel like doing a leg day workout) by going through hundreds of red torii gates with prayers written on them. Truly a spectacular place that fills you with awe.

My friend Christal had a big day yesterday - she was appointed as CEO and President of Frisco Chamber of Commerce. Over the years, I served with her on various committees, Boards, and events, and I was always amazed with her patience, positive attitude, knowledge, and passion for serving others. She's the perfect choice for the job and I look forward to watching her thrive in her new role.

While she was a part of the Chamber Board of Directors (which included a year as Chair), I had her in front of my camera a few times, and it's cool to see those photos accompany the various announcements and news stories over the last 24 hours.

My photo "International Orange" has been accepted to "Greyscale" exhibit at The Ardest Gallery in The Woodlands. There were over 300 submissions from 70+ Texas artists, so it's a big deal to have a piece in the show. If you're so inclined, you can drive down to The Woodlands this Saturday, October 14, for the reception starting at 4 p.m., so you can see this amazing 24"x20" metal print in person, and be there at 5 p.m. when the juror Rosa Ana Orlando will announce the prizes.

A smaller version of this photo (along with a few of my other photos) will also be in the exhibit at the Touchmark Art Gala, an event at the Touchmark at Emerald Lake community in McKinney. The reception for that event is November 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Fun fact: International Orange is the official name of the color used to paint the Golden Gate Bridge.

Here are some photos I took of him during his cooking demonstration at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship held in Frisco back in May.
