Happy Juneteenth Everybody!

In the summer of 1862, when the US Army occupied Fredericksburg, thousands of enslaved people sought freedom by crossing the Rappahannock River into Union lines.

Over the course of the war, this story was repeated over and over again in many locations, touching every battlefield in our park, as freedom seekers resisted against the Confederacy.

While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, many enslaved people in the South were not freed until federal soldiers gained the power to enforce the orders. For the people of Galveston, Texas, this happened on June 19th, 1865 with the passage of General Orders No. 3 which stated, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Today, we celebrate the individuals who worked to end slavery and we reflect on the struggles of generations of Americans who have labored to realize the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice for all.

Tonight I got the opportunity to photograph the Milky Way in a dark sky location literally five miles from my house. I was fighting the moonlight, some persistent lens condensation, and a ton of airplanes flying through the scene lol, but I'm really happy with how this turned out. :) Can't beat that short drive that's for sure! Thanks to Grant for setting up this photo meetup in Corbin, VA.

You can see some dry lightening in the distance as the luminaries start to burn out.

This is just a tiny glimpse of the mesmerizing shimmer of candles dancing in the breeze towards the end of the night. There is just no way to capture the full effect of being surrounded with 15,300 flickering candles.
