Happy Black History Month! While Black History deserves to be celebrated and acknowledged for more than just one month, we want to make sure that we use our platform to highlight and appreciate those who have paved the way for us.

Today we show appreciation for West All Saints Street, which served as the epicenter for black businesses in Frederick County during segregation. The street was made up Frederick’s first black owned doctor’s office, a library, grocery stores, beauty salons, pool halls, soda fountains, dry cleaners, clothing stores, churches and more. West All Saints street was known as “the pulse of Frederick's African American community” well into the 1960s and early ‘70s.

After the end of legal segregation, things began to change for the better and the community became more integrated. However, we are thankful for organizations like AARCH Society of Frederick County, who work tirelessly to preserve and record the history of this special place and many others in Frederick County.

Fun fact: Our first event, the July 4th pop up market was held just a block away from West All Saints Street!
