One of my favorite things about being a board member on is helping put together our annual assistant workshop at studios, who have been so gracious in allowing us to return year after year. I always learn something new, and getting to see early career creatives in person and in action reminds me why I love what I do. So, please join us on April 25th for a day of learning fundamental skills that will help you become an asset on set, and make connections with fellow creatives that will become collaborators for future projects. https://www.apadc.com/events/2026/4/25/apa-dc-2026-assistant-workshop

Best of 2025

Every year, I make this same post about the torturous exercise that I do - taking stock of a whole year’s worth of images, & distilling it down to 100 images that are my favorites. It’s brutal, but so useful to give myself some feedback.

Whenever I start this project, I always go into it feeling like the images I took in the previous year were… lacking somehow. But once I compile the final set, it’s a bit of a sigh of relief. What I saw were moments of joy, clients that have continued to trust me to document their important work, people who were vulnerable & trusted me to take their portraits, quiet moments of reflection, & new adventures as a family. Last year had me in Chicago, Austin, Ft. Lauderdale, New York, Shenandoah, Williamsburg, New River Gorge, & Hawaii. Hawaii was particularly special, because it only happened because another client had to switch their conference to virtual last minute, so I got to re-approach an existing client that I had previously had to decline due to the conflict, & they graciously let my wife & son tag along! It was fun letting them see what I do, & have my son shoot alongside me a bit.

While not really fitting in my “100 best photos” theme, I did want to mention that I’ve been incorporating video more for my clients over the last year. I’ve done a few things in the past for clients, but on the sly. I decided to lean into the medium & offer those services more fully. I’ve been so fortunate to have a colleague nearby who’s a great editor, & she’s been helping turn mountains of footage into engaging content. Check out some of our work at: https://www.samlevitan.com/video

As usual, I am forever grateful & indebted to my colleagues, collaborators, clients, fellow APA|DC members, & family. They put up with my strange job. My wife, son, & father-in-law keep things going at home when I’m away & our doggo, Rufus, who reminds us to stay positive each day.

2026 is looking to be another odd one, but with a lot of adventures in store. I’m looking forward to putting together another set like this next year!

This Fall had an incredibly busy conference season. I’m realizing now that it’s Winter, that I had prepped a post back in October of all of the conferences I shot in that month, and never got to actually posting it! So here are some snaps from NCBA-CLUSA’s Co-Op Impact Conference, NADCO NOW in Ft. Lauderdale, OFN41, and two smaller conferences at UVA Darden. Thanks to all of my loyal clients and collaborators that bring me back year after year to crawl around on the floor or duck into shadows to find the moments that tell the stories of these truly inspirational events. Enjoy!

Hello friends! Just a friendly reminder that it's not too late to join me for next week's APA|DC Happy Hour - on zoom! On July 15th at 7-9pm (Eastern), I’m looking forward to having some great conversations with fellow photographers and creatives - and since we’ll be meeting virtually, it doesn’t matter where you come in from! As always, our happy hours are open to the photographic community at large, so you’re welcome to join whether you’re an APA member or just a colleague in the industry.

The conversation will be pretty open, but if you have a topic that you’d like to discuss, feel free to drop me a comment or a note.

Please note that you must register for the event to be admitted to the zoom call!

I’m looking forward to connecting with you all soon!

Way back in the day, like many photographers, I subscribed to Photo District News. PDN was a great resource at the time, and it still kind of stings that it’s gone now. Of the many issues that came to my mailbox, and the perhaps far too many that I clung onto for decades afterwards, there were few that really stand out in my memory. One was the May, 2006 issue, their big Photo Annual, that featured a portrait of Steve Martin sitting at a table aligned just so that it looked like some breadsticks arranged by his arms were his fingers. Not only is it an incredibly funny and clever portrait, but it succeed so well in telling a story in one frame of who Steve Martin is in a nutshell. One of the exercises that I use with new photographers that I work with is to have them look at a photograph and try to tell a story that goes with it. I feel that the most engaging photographs can get a viewer who has no context to tell a story that’s close to reality. This portrait works so well in that respect. And that is why I am so looking forward to the fact that APA|DC is hosting the photographer of that portrait, Chris Buck, on June 10th for a special interactive discussion.
