"We always taught you to stay with Kiwi. And now you are forevermore with your best friend. From a shy, terrified dog, who was afraid of touch and the world, you became confident, loving, and demanded pets with your paw. You learned to love life, love us, and taught us that patience and love can help anyone.
On a cool March day in 2013, we walked in to take you home as our fourth foster. Your name was Dana, and you were so scared that we ended up carrying you to the car. The moment we brought you home, Kiwi claimed you as her sister. It took us only a few days to realize that you were the missing puzzle piece. Kiwi taught you to not be afraid, showed you how to go from terrified street pup to a confident, loving girl who obsessed over food, walks, cuddles, pets, and life.
The past thirteen years of adventure have been full of love and adventures. You learned to love food—so much that you taught yourself how to steal it. I still remember you being so fast at stealing pizza or a bagel out of my hand; it was almost like I had not been holding it! You even taught yourself to jump from the rocking chair to the breakfast bar, just to try to get more food. You also knew exactly when mealtimes were and would demand the food by jumping on us or standing and staring until we gave in. We knew you were grateful for every piece we gave you.
I still remember the first time that you demanded more petting with your paw. We were sitting on the couch, my last year at home before going to college, and I was petting you, but stopped. Then you reached your paw out and grabbed by hand back, demanding more. So we never stopped giving you more. You were so stubborn and independent, never needing our help. You were goofy and loving, and loved your sisters, Kiwi, Darcie and Molly. You always happily accepted their cuddles and kisses.
We taught you during walks to stay “with Kiwi!”. You loved walks and hiking, car rides, and running around being the “rufferee” when other dogs were playing, barking at them, chasing them, and intervening when it got too rough.
You and I had a special bond. You would always come to me first, be the first to greet me and cuddle with me, especially when I would come home from college. You would get so excited, have zoomies around the house, then tackle me with kisses. You knew when I was sad or needed someone and would cuddle me above anyone else—except maybe Kiwi or Darcie.
The quiet moments were the best moments, whether they were in the car with your ear flapping in the wind, your tongue out and a big smile on your face, or cuddling on the couch with us or in the dog bed with your sisters.
You were our lucky four leaf, four-legged Clover. And we will miss you, but we know that Kiwi is showing you the ropes up there, just like she did when you first came to us thirteen years ago.
Rest easy, lucky girl. We love you with everything. We will miss you, but we are glad you are with Kiwi again. Say hi to her for us. We love you, Clover. Always and forever."
