I don’t think I’ll forget this evening anytime soon. After spending so much time checking on this nest, watching from a distance and hoping everything would go well, I finally got to sit beneath the trees and watch these little screech owlets explore the world around them. Tiny wings, curious eyes, and those clumsy little movements as they hopped from branch to branch, taking in a world that suddenly seemed so much bigger. Moments like this make all the miles, long evenings, and hours spent searching worth it. There’s something incredibly special about watching a story you’ve invested so much time in finally unfold. Tonight was one of those evenings that reminded me exactly why I fell in love with wildlife photography in the first place. Kanawha County, WV

I’ve always dreamed of having the chance to photograph Eastern Screech Owlets. Earlier this year, when I found a mated pair tucked away in the woods, I poured nearly every bit of my free time into monitoring and observing them. Countless hours of hiking, searching tree cavities, and quietly watching their behavior finally paid off in the best way possible. Seeing these tiny owlets peeking out into the world for the first time was something I’ll never forget.
I’m incredibly proud of these images, and even more excited about the ones I still have left to finish processing. Moments like this are exactly why I spend so much time out in the woods. Kanawha County, WV

Crash landing! 😳

I went to check on the little Eastern Screech Owls today expecting to peek into the cavity and see those fuzzy faces staring back at me one more time. But overnight, everything had changed. The nest had emptied, and the babies had taken their first steps into the world beyond that old tree.

As I searched the woods around the cavity, I started spotting them one by one perched on nearby branches. Tiny wings, oversized feet, and wide curious eyes taking in a world they had only heard from inside the safety of that tree. They spent the evening exploring the forest around them, making short, clumsy flights from limb to limb and learning what it means to be an owl.

It’s hard to explain just how special it was to witness. One day they were tucked away inside a dark little cavity, and the next they were out among the trees, beginning a completely new chapter of life. Watching those first awkward flights and curious little moments felt like getting a front row seat to something truly wild and beautiful. Kanawha County, WV

I’ve photographed a mated pair of barred owls in this area the last few months, but haven’t had any luck finding their nesting cavity! Wish me luck! Lewis County, WV

Tucked away inside an old tree cavity sat this beautiful little Eastern Screech Owlet, peeking out into the world with wide eyes and endless curiosity. Every few seconds it would lean a little farther from the safety of its hollow home, studying every movement in the forest around it. I was kind of surprised to see only one owlet peering out, but I made more sense of it all yesterday evening. More to come! Kanawha County, WV

Yesterday was a tough one, I said goodbye to my grandmother, and it’s hard to put into words what she meant to me. Some of my earliest, most meaningful memories trace back to her. Sitting together at the eagle show in Dollywood, completely in awe, or riding along those quiet backroads while c**n hunting with grandpa, catching glimpses of foxes slipping through the fields.

I didn’t realize it then, but that’s where it all began for me. That sense of wonder. That deep love for wildlife and the outdoors. It was planted in those simple, beautiful moments we shared.

Every time I’m out there with a camera in hand, watching animals live their wild, honest lives, I know a piece of that passion came from her.

I’ll carry those memories with me forever. And in every fox I see, every bird that takes flight, I’ll be reminded of where it all started… and who I have to thank for it.

I love you Grandma 🤍

Golden light fading over the hills, I thought I was watching from a distance… until this little one quietly circled behind me and stole the whole show.
Curious, fearless, and full of personality, she soaked up every second in front of my lens before finally curling up on this warm rock like she owned the place.
There’s something about the innocent curiosity of fox kits that just stops you in your tracks. Lewis County, WV

It’s always the quiet ones.
While the rest were bouncing around, this little guy stayed low and studied everything… especially me. Shoutout to my followers for always being the best! Special thanks to two followers for sharing this new fox den with me!
