Overall, I got my first Aquatech housing for the Nikon Z6ii back in early 2021. At the time, my goal was very specific: to use a 300mm with a 1.4 teleconverter (giving me 420mm) in an underwater housing to photograph birds. It worked well and I loved the results, but it was also very challenging due to the focusing limitations of the Z6ii.

In early 2025, I upgraded both my Aquatech housing and camera to the Nikon Z6iii, which added bird eye-tracking — and that made a huge difference. I also added a dome port, which allowed me to start experimenting with wide-angle bird photography in the housing.

My goal now is to show both the bird above and the underwater world many of them live in and around. Finding birds that are cooperative enough to photograph at focal lengths from 24mm all the way down to 10mm isn’t easy. It’s also a challenge finding locations with clear water and birds that are comfortable enough to let you close — but slowly, I’ve been finding opportunities and really enjoying the challenge of photographing birds in this unique way.

What I really love about the XLD-135G Glass Dome, and why I wanted to upgrade, is how perfectly it captures light rays.

When shooting underwater against the sun, seeing light pass through a wave is incredible. With plexiglass domes, that light often creates purple edges, sparkles, or dust artifacts. Real glass delivers a much cleaner result.

On top of that, glass is more resistant to scratches. It is slightly heavier too, which actually helps when shooting underwater.
