Long before modern highways, it was the railroads that fueled Ohioโ€™s booming Hanging Rock Region. Trains roared through Jackson, Vinton, Scioto, and Lawrence counties, carrying the coal and charcoal iron that built America.

But when the furnaces went cold, the tracks fell silent. While Northern Ohio's tracks were paved over by expanding cities, Southern Ohio's railroads were simply left for nature to reclaim.

Now, you can rediscover this vanishing piece of American history in Author Bonnie Chapman 's highly anticipated new book, "SOUTHERN OHIO RAILROAD HISTORY: OHIO'S HANGING ROCK REGION" (releasing this October)! Inside, youโ€™ll unlock:

โ€ข ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Hidden Treasures: A close-up look at forgotten stations, decaying depots, lost bridges, and overgrown tunnels.
โ€ข ๐Ÿ“ท A Visual Guide: Striking photos of structures still hiding in the countrysideโ€”some visible from the road, others requiring deep wilderness hikes.
โ€ข ๐Ÿ“œ Rich Local Lore: The rise and fall of the industry that once made this region thrive.
Whether you are a model train enthusiast, a local history buff, or a weekend explorer, this book is the perfect addition to your collection.

Northwest Ohio played a vital role in the rise of Americaโ€™s railroad age. This book explores the region stretching from Tiffin to the Indiana state line and from Toledo to Lima, examining how railroads shaped the communities, industries, and growth of the area.

At its peak, northwest Ohio was served by more than twenty railroad lines and over 250 passenger and combination depots, along with freight houses, bridges, and other essential structures. These railroads supported rapidly developing lake port cities and connected rural towns to the wider world. Over time, however, many lines became obsolete with the rise of the automobile, and countless depots vanished.
Today, most remaining rail lines exist solely for freight transport, but traces of the past endure. Hidden in plain sight, abandoned depots, bridges, and rail corridors stand as quiet reminders of a once-thriving network of stone and steel. This book invites readers to rediscover northwest Ohioโ€™s railroad heritage.
