I was recently asked to drive from Texas to photograph 7 Camino Don Patron, a truly unique contemporary estate off Tano Road in Santa Fe, NM. The home was originally designed by architect Jeff Harnar and was inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe — and you can feel that influence in the lines, light, forms, and relationship to the New Mexico landscape.
This was a reshoot for a Sotheby’s agent after the original photographs didn’t quite convey what makes the property so unusual. A designer came in from San Diego, and the owner's architect flew in as well, so it was one of those rare jobs where everyone involved understood that the photography needed to do more than document the rooms. It needed to capture the feeling of the place.
One of the most important images they wanted was a night shot that showed the house beneath the New Mexico sky. That meant waiting for the right light, watching the color shift, and letting the stars become part of the architecture. It also meant dealing with what was almost a full moon that night, making the right shot even more difficult.
It meant a lot to be called out of state for a property like this — not just because of the scale of the job, but because homes like this are why I love architectural photography. When a house has a real point of view, the photographs have to honor that.
Santa Fe always gives me something to chase: light, shadow, sky, silence, and a little bit of magic.
