This year’s Rodeo & Western Lifestyle Workshop hit a little different for me.

Two days before the class started, I had a heart stent put in. To be honest, the first two days were rough. I was sore to the core, dragging myself into the classroom each morning and pretty much collapsing each night. I leaned hard on Lisa to help carry the instruction side while I just tried to keep moving.

But somewhere around the third day… something changed.

I quit thinking about myself.

I started focusing completely on helping the students get the images they came there for. Watching them learn to SEE instead of just take pictures. Watching confidence grow. Watching them experience the cowboy way of life through the lens.

And strangely enough… I started healing.

Maybe there’s truth to the old saying that it’s better to give than receive. This time, I think we all got both.

The camera in my hand, the arena dust, the horses, the sunsets, the people, the cowboy way of life right in front of me… somehow it all became medicine.

Sometimes healing doesn’t happen sitting still.

Sometimes it happens standing in the dirt at sunset with purpose in your heart and a camera in your hand.

Lost our dog sassy last night, those of you who know us understand how big a part that sassy and bodie are in our life. It’s strange how we get so attached to these guys, and they leave a gaping hole that their joy once filled.
We nurse here for a week and thought she might pull through…..not real sure what happened to her, I just know she will be missed so much!

Hey Guys, Last day for the May giveaway print of art.joeduty.com will be giving away a 11x14 custom limited edition print. This one is # 35 0f 200 and will be signed Some images you plan.
Some images simply happen.
Years ago, while chasing the full moon across Wise County, I found myself parked below the old museum on the hill in Decatur. Back then, I had become a little obsessed with lining the moon up behind places that meant something to our town… little pieces of history frozen beneath a Texas sky.
That night, everything came together for just a split second.
The full moon rose perfectly behind the museum’s incredible architecture, and just as I clicked the shutter, a lone bird crossed through the face of the moon.
One frame. One moment. Gone forever.
Several years later, the old museum burned, making this image even more meaningful to me today. It’s more than a photograph now… it’s a memory of a place that once watched over Decatur from the hill.
To celebrate the launch of a new monthly giveaway through my fine art store, I’ll be giving away a LIMITED EDITION print of this image to one lucky follower this month.

“all gas no brakes” energy… the dog looks like he just saw next week and approved of it. Had an unexpected spectator on class this year during the Dog herding portion of thetexasphotographyworkshops.com this is a treat and I never saw it in the frame while shooting, another reason you never delete in the field!
