Spotted on the edge of "Big Meadow" between Polebridge, Montana and Kintla Lake. The single vehicle width "road" is only 14 miles long, but takes an hour or more to drive. The scenery is truly amazing!

Happy 4th Of July!
Here's something different for a change. Mountain Goats don't fly, but they're incredibly sure footed, and can climb almost totally vertical cliffs. This little one is probably 2 years old and learning how to do things on his own. They still stay in groups, but his mother has run him off.

Shooting Osprey on Hungry Horse Reservoir.
Not the most flattering shot of me, but this is what my family resorts to after hours of sitting and spotting the incoming birds, sometimes to not even catch a single shot. I'm constantly refreshing the focus with a 600mm on a gimble mount, and getting ready to follow any short notice call outs of a bird coming in. This goes on for hours (3-6 or more) each time. Watch that first step to the left... it's a doozy!

Here's a few Montana Osprey having a family meal. This was getting later in the Summer, almost time for the female to leave things up to the male, get the youngster out of the nest and teach it to fish for itself.

Happy Father's day to you all! I wanted to share a photo of my Dad on the east side of the mountains, taken by my mom in the mid-50's when they were dating. That's when East Glacier Park Montana was introduced to a real Texas Cowboy. He worked at the lodge, on a Dude Ranch and as a Hunting Guide for the wealthy visitors. My Grandfather was the Purchasing Agent for the hotels of the Great Northern Railway, and my Mom and her family spent summers in a home behind the lodge while he worked, opening and then closing the hotels after the Summer. My Dad was making his way to Alaska when he met my Mother. The rest is history. BTW, those are real chaps, hat and 30-30... he was quite the character!

Here is the male from a different pair of Osprey that nest on the west side of Hungry Horse Reservoir in Montana, coming in close to sit for a minute. The reservoir has had some very heavy rain recently that damaged the narrow roads, so the west side will be closed until Fall.

While I'm posting bird shots from Montana, I have to post one of my very favorite shots of my favorite birds to photograph. This shot is of an Osprey, several feet above the nest coming in for a landing. They have such powerful wings!

Here is another shot of the same Bald Eagle after it had moved to the opposite side of us. It was very interested in gathering more mud, or the grass along the river that was in the soft mud, and really not interested in us. Glad we weren't disturbing the nest work that must have been going on across the river.

While stopped about 60ft above a marshy edge of the South Fork of the Flathead River not far north of the Spotted Bear Ranger Station, this Bald Eagle was busy harvesting mud from the bank and carrying it across the river to a hidden nest. It pretty much ignored our presence the entire time. This was shot from about 200' feet away
