We’re deep into fall, and I’m between sessions on a Thursday. Seems like the perfect time to share the G family.

Don’t worry, we got the smiling photos, too. But moments like these? They’re the ones I think about when I imagine myself at 80, looking back on my own family. The way we laughed, the way the kids played, all the little things that made this season of life ours. And I hope that when they’re 80, these photographs bring them right back to what life felt like with their family, too.

Because as much as I love a beautiful family portrait, I think these are the photographs that only get better with time.

As I get ready to blog this session, it reminded me of something I hear all the time: “We’ve never been professionally photographed before.”

I know. After 15 years of photographing people, I can pretty safely assume most couples stepping in front of my camera aren’t arriving with years of modeling experience. You don’t need it.

Let M & E be proof that all I want from you is pretty simple. Run around. Spin together. Be affectionate. Give me all the PDA. Laugh at how strange it initially feels to have someone following you with a camera. Let me learn how the two of you naturally interact while I create some stunning photographs of you.

And then when we’re finished? Go to dinner. Order a drink. Celebrate the fact that you’re getting married.

It’s my birthday, so naturally I’m making the case for why hiring a Virgo as your wedding photographer is a very good idea. ♍️✨
I’ve always been someone who notices things. The timeline running a few minutes behind. The light changing outside. Your dad quietly watching from across the room while everyone else is looking somewhere else.
After 15 years of photographing weddings, I’ve realized that might be one of my favorite things about the way I work.
I like a plan. I like knowing what’s coming next. I’ll straighten the necklace, find the missing family member and quietly keep us moving. But while I’m doing all of that, I’m still watching for everything happening in between.
Because being detail-oriented isn’t only about the details.
Sometimes it’s fixing something before you ever notice it. Sometimes it’s knowing when the plan needs to change. And sometimes it’s noticing the photograph nobody knew to ask for.
Organized enough to have a plan. Experienced enough to know when to abandon it.

An engagement session at Newfields will always have my vote.

M + E wandered the gardens on one of those late summer evenings that makes Indianapolis look especially good. A little direction, a lot of walking, and plenty of room for the moments in between.

A + D have been married for three years and wanted photographs of this particular chapter of their life together — the one where home is downtown Indianapolis.
No engagement announcement. No wedding countdown. No major milestone required. Just the two of them, in the place they live.
I love engagement photographs but there’s something really special about deciding your daily life is worth documenting too.
Because someday downtown will be the place they used to live and they’ll have photographs of what it felt like when it was home.

Some photographs are obvious. The first look. The kiss. The portraits. The dance floor.

And then there are the smaller pieces of a wedding day that don’t always make the shot list, but somehow become the ones you’re grateful to have later.

The way the room felt. The people gathered around the table. The hand squeeze. The rain that changed the plan but not the mood. The moments happening quietly between everything else.

There was something almost surreal about A&M’s engagement morning. We started early, with wildfire smoke hanging in the air and softening everything around us into this hazy, film-like light. It wasn’t the morning any of us would have planned, but that’s one of my favorite things about photography. You work with what the day gives you. And sometimes what the day gives you is something you never could have recreated on purpose.

We photographed two professional models and a real couple during the same styled shoot, and I kept thinking about the difference..

Professional models are incredible at what they do. They understand their bodies. They know how a small shift changes the photograph. They can take a direction and turn it into movement almost instantly. And as a photographer, I love that because I believe in direction. I believe in knowing how to place someone in good light, where a hand should go, how to create shape, and when a photograph needs a little help becoming what I can already see in my head.

Then I photographed our real couple and something different happened. They already knew how to reach for each other. They knew what would make the other person laugh. Their hands naturally landed where they always do. There were tiny looks and familiar movements that no amount of posing could manufacture. It’s why I don’t think wedding photography has to choose between posed and candid.

There are moments when I’ll guide you completely. I’ll tell you where to stand, what to do with your hands, where the light is best…..

And then there are moments when the best thing I can possibly do is stop talking.

Because sometimes the photograph I was planning is beautiful. And sometimes what happens two seconds later is better.

Knowing the difference is the job.
